Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): A flavor enhancer. It has gotten a bad reputation, but according to the Food and Drug Administration, it is “generally recognized as safe.” MSG can be found in Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats. Because some people may have short-term reactions to MSG such as shortness of breath, nausea and flushing, it must be listed on food labels.

Red Dye #40: The additive that gives a Flamin’ Hot Cheeto its artificial red color. It’s also used in snacks such as Doritos and strawberry and raspberry Toaster Strudel, and cereals such as Lucky Charms and Fruity Pebbles. Although it can be blamed for hyperactivity, dizziness and an upset stomach, the FDA says Red 40 is considered safe.

Citric Acid: According to the European Citric Acid Manufactures Association (ECAMA), citric acid is used in soft drinks and candy to give a sour or bitter taste. This is what contributes to the Flamin’ Hot Cheeto’s spiciness. Citric acid also is used in items other than food, such as baby shampoos, mascara and lipstick. The FDA regards it as safe.
