The 2000 Yard Stare was a painting created by war artist and writer Tom Lea in 1944 following his experiences at the Battle of Peleliu. It portrays a marine during the battle experiencing what was later coined to be "the thousand yard stare", a typical symptom of shell shock.

Beginning in 1941, the artist Tom Lea was employed by LIFE magazine to paint and write about the war as he saw it.[2]
