What is a soda fountain phosphate? ›

Phosphates were carbonated beverages made-from-scratch by the "soda jerk" using carbonated soda water, flavored syrups and phosphoric acid, an ingredient still used today in many brands of soda-pop including co*ke. Popular flavors included cherry, lime (usually called a green river), chocolate and vanilla.

Certain types of pop/soda can be high in phosphorus. All cola (both diet and regular) contains phosphorus and should be limited (1 can per day recommended) and/or avoided.

Phosphate soda is a type of beverage that has a tangy or sour taste. These beverages became popular among children in the 1870s in the United States. Phosphate beverages were made with fruit flavorings, egg, malt, or wine.

Uses for Phospho-Soda

Sodium phosphate dibasic and sodium phosphate monobasic combination is used to clean or empty your bowels before an imaging procedure called colonoscopy. This medicine works by cleaning your colon and causing you to have diarrhea.

Phosphates are not toxic to people or animals unless they are present at very high levels. Digestive problems could occur from extremely high levels of phosphate. The soluble or bio-available orthophosphate is then used by plants and animals.

Phosphates are used as dietary supplements for patients who are unable to get enough phosphorus in their regular diet, usually because of certain illnesses or diseases.

* Phosphoric Acid can irritate the lungs. Repeated exposure may cause bronchitis to develop with cough, phlegm, and/or shortness of breath. * Long-term exposure to the liquid may cause drying and cracking of the skin.

While phosphates are low toxicity, they instead cause nutrient pollution and feed the algae. This leads to eutrophication and harmful algal bloom. Many countries have banned the use of phosphates in detergent, including the European Union and the United States.

Is phosphate harmful to the body? ›

Too much phosphate can be toxic. It can cause diarrhea and calcification (hardening) of organs and soft tissue, and can interfere with the body's ability to use iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

It plays an important role in how the body uses carbohydrates and fats. It is also needed for the body to make protein for the growth, maintenance, and repair of cells and tissues. Phosphorus also helps the body make ATP, a molecule the body uses to store energy. Phosphorus works with the B vitamins.

It causes eutrophication (a reduction of dissolved oxygen in water bodies caused by an increase of minerals and organic nutrients) of rivers and lakes. This reduced level of oxygen in water ends up suffocating fish.

PHOSPHO-SODA may cause a temporary decrease in the volume of the blood and changes in the amounts of salts in the blood, which, in healthy and fit people, return to normal in 24 hours.

As is well known, cola represents a strong exogenous source of phosphate, due to high phosphorus content (about 15–20 mg/dL), more than other carbonated soft drinks (15).

For natural reservoirs used by the drinking water industry, the level of total phosphates must be 40 ppm (parts per million) or less according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Any more than that is no longer considered safe for drinking water supply according to the U.S. EPA Drinking Water Standards.

Aside from these dangerous effects, studies have also shown that high phosphorus levels may directly harm the kidneys and cause a loss of kidney function. This loss of function increases the risk for kidney failure.

Answer: Phosphorus is not added during the carbonation process.

What causes high phosphorus? High phosphorus is often a sign of kidney damage or disease. Healthy kidneys balance the phosphorus in your body by removing any extra phosphorus from your blood. If you have kidney disease, your kidneys may not remove extra phosphorus.

It gives soft drinks a tangy flavor and prevents the growth of mold and bacteria, which can multiply easily in a sugary solution. Most of soda's acidity also comes from phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid is made from the mineral phosphorus, which is found naturally in many foods.

Which soda has the most phosphoric acid? ›

While dark colas, including diet and fruit-flavored varieties, are at the top of the acidity chart and contain harmful phosphoric acid, non-cola soft drinks still cause two to five times the amount of damage.

Soft drinks contain phosphorus, so only drink clear ones. Don't drink Mountain Dew® (any kind), colas, root beers, Dr. Pepper® (any kind). Also, avoid Hawaiian Punch®, Fruitworks®, Cool® iced tea, and Aquafina® tangerine pineapple.

Short-term Exposure: Solid phosphoric acid or its solutions may cause skin burns. Contact with the eyes may produce irritation and eye burns. Exposure to phosphoric acid vapor or mist may cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.

Permanent damage can result. Effects of Long-Term (Chronic) Exposure: At low concentrations: Can cause dry, red, cracked skin (dermatitis) following skin contact. Carcinogenicity: Not known to cause cancer.

Cola beverages contain between 50 and 70 mg of phosphoric acid per 100 mL (references 1 and 5).

Acute phosphorus intoxication has been a familiar syndrome for many years. It has been stated that ingestion of as little as 15 mg of elemental yellow phosphorus may cause symptoms, and 60 mg can be fatal.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN

Sewage discharges and fertilizer runoff containing phosphorus contribute to increased nutrient water levels. Runoff or leaching into groundwater can occur when fertilizer is applied at times when (1) it can be removed by rainfall or snowmelt, or (2) land or crops cannot absorb the nutrients.

Too much phosphorus can cause increased growth of algae and large aquatic plants, which can result in decreased levels of dissolved oxygen– a process called eutrophication. High levels of phosphorus can also lead to algae blooms that produce algal toxins which can be harmful to human and animal health.

Phosphorus (P) promotes root growth, promotes flowering & fruit set, and disease resistance.

Why was fleet phospho-soda taken off the market? ›

The risk of kidney damage from Fleet Phospho-Soda and other oral sodium phosphate products was initially reported in 2003. Three years later, the Food and Drug Administration released a report stating that oral sodium phosphate solutions were linked to a serious side effect known as acute phosphate nephropathy.

You should not take sodium phosphate more than once in 7 days. tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take.

For oral dosage forms (tablets for solution): To replace phosphorus lost by the body: Adults, teenagers, and children over 4 years of age—The equivalent of 250 mg of phosphorus (1 tablet) dissolved in eight ounces of water four times a day.

Phosphates in Soft Drinks

A 12 oz. can of cola with caffeine contains the most with 37 mg of phosphorus, while the same size serving of diet cola with caffeine contains 32 mg. Cream soda, ginger ale and root beer are all phosphorus free. Milk and yogurt contain more phosphorus than soft drinks.

Phosphorus, sodium, calories, carbohydrates and protein are minimal in black coffee and not of nutritional consideration.

Phosphate pads are great for lowering your phosphate levels in your aquarium. Excess phosphates in the water column can cause algae growth and compromise fish health. Adding phosphate absorbing filter pads to your filter can ensure your tank remains healthy.

Why did they remove phosphates? ›

In 2010, seventeen US states implemented mandatory bans on the sale of phosphates in automatic dishwasher detergent, due to concern over the adverse effects that arise from excess phosphorus loads to our lakes, rivers, and streams.

Phosphates are common additives in detergents to soften the hard water. It enhances the cleaning power of the detergents, which is very helpful in spiking its popularity and while marketing.

Acute phosphate toxicity can provoke hypocalcaemia and associated symptoms including tetany, hypotension and tachycardia. Moderate phosphate toxicity that takes longer to develop can lead to the deposition of calcium phosphate crystals in various tissues, including often fatal cardiovascular calcification.

Yet in larger-than-normal amounts, phosphate can cause bone and muscle problems and increase your risk for heart attacks and strokes. A high phosphate level is often a sign of kidney damage. It's more common in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially in those with end-stage kidney disease.

PhOSPhOriC ACid

Phosphorus is a mineral found widely in nature and plays an important role in how our bodies get energy. It is a major component of bones and teeth. Phosphoric acid, which contains phosphorus, is used to add a tangy taste to some colas.

But if your phosphate levels are too high, it can remove calcium from your bones, which makes them brittle. It can also cause calcium deposits in your eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels, which increase your risk of heart attack, stroke and death over time.

The fact is that you don't really need phosphate remover. If you want to avoid algae, keep your pool clean and maintain the chemical levels in your pool water. Phosphates on their own are not toxic, but some of the chemicals used to remove them are.

At high enough levels, phosphates feed algae to grow in your pool. This will turn your pool's water green and cloudy. It is unlikely that you will be able to remove all of the phosphates from your pool. However, your goal is to keep phosphate levels low enough that they won't help algae grow.
