What is the phosphate at a soda fountain? ›

Phosphate beverages were made with fruit flavorings, egg, malt, or wine, in combination with seltzer (carbonated water). In the 1900s, the beverages became popular, and fruit-flavoured phosphate sodas were served at soda fountains, before losing popularity to ice cream-based treats in the 1930s.

This category of drinks is named for the chemical on which they all depend—acid phosphate. At the turn of the century, sodas sweetened with flavored syrup and balanced with a few dashes of acid phosphate were a popular delicacy, served alongside milkshakes, rickeys, and ice cream sodas.

Phosphate sodas were the predecessor to milkshakes. They were a combination of soda water, phosphoric acid and flavoring. This was most likely fruit syrup but could even be booze.

Acid phosphate actually delivers the same sour pucker as citrus without the sweet, fruit-flavored side effects. That means that a few dashes of acid phosphate can give a drink a tart, refreshing quality while also enhancing its overall flavor thanks to the built-in salt content.

Phosphates are water treatment chemicals used to solve specific water quality problems resulting from inorganic contaminants (iron, manganese, calcium, etc.) in ground water supplies and also to maintain water quality (inhibit corrosion, scale, biofilm, reduce lead and copper levels) in the distribution system.

While phosphates are low toxicity, they instead cause nutrient pollution and feed the algae. This leads to eutrophication and harmful algal bloom. Many countries have banned the use of phosphates in detergent, including the European Union and the United States.

For example, there are many low-phosphorus beverages: coffee, tea, green tea, and flavored water. If you drink sodas, diet versions of Sprite®, 7UP®, ginger ale, orange soda, and root beer are phosphorus-free choices. Colas such as Diet co*ke® and Diet Pepsi® contain added phosphorus.

"Tonic" has been used in eastern Massachusetts and parts of Maine and New Hampshire since at least 1888. Its usage has been gradually declining in favor of "soda". In some areas, "tonic" is still understood to mean "soft drink", but many regard it as an antiquated term.

As is well known, cola represents a strong exogenous source of phosphate, due to high phosphorus content (about 15–20 mg/dL), more than other carbonated soft drinks (15).

Sports drinks and protein shakes that contain protein-rich dairy ingredients and added phosphorus ingredients will tend to be closer to an excellent source of phosphorus. However, the small amounts of phosphorus in some soft drinks, teas and juice-based products are not adequate to meet your daily phosphorus needs.

Extra phosphorus causes body changes that pull calcium out of your bones, making them weak. High phosphorus and calcium levels also lead to dangerous calcium deposits in blood vessels, lungs, eyes, and heart. Over time this can lead to increased risk of heart attack, stroke or death.

Although phosphate is not harmful to humans, anthropogenic, or man-made, inputs of phosphorus are well known to have a significant impact on ecosystems, and can damage the health of rivers and lakes (known as eutrophication).

Phosphorus additives make up somewhere between 10% to 50% of phosphorus intake in a typical Western diet, according to estimates. Some estimates suggest that a can of cola contains 50 to 60 mg of phosphoric acid. Some flavored waters can contain up to 85 mg of phosphorus per bottle.
