No Place Like Homeis an adorable farming simulator by Chicken Launcher. This game was released in Early Access back in 2020, and it has been lovingly altered and updated ever since. The full release came around in March 2022, and anyone who hasn’t played this little gem in a while will be pleasantly surprised by all the lovely changes that the developers have made.

Here is a complete guide with the details you need to know of the game on Steam as of Update 1.0K_190on March 29, 2022 and now also for the Nintendo Switch. Looking for a walkthrough with all the quests? We have you covered as well, find it here.

Getting Started

The tutorial forNo Place Like Homeis fantastic, giving new players a great rundown of the actions. There is also a ladder to the left of Ellen during the tutorial that allows players to skip it completely if they have already played it. I would suggest all new players try out the tutorial to get used to combat, planting, interacting with animals, and picking up important items.

NOTE: Unlike the Early Access Steam version ofNo Place Like Home, players will not be able to keep anything from the tutorial.

Some key things to keep in mind when startingNPLH for the first time:

• On the Switch, aiming where to water or plant things can be difficult to manoeuvre. At first I played the game with the camera behind my character, more on ground level. Aiming to water a square or plant a seed was super annoying. But if you pan the camera to top down view as much as possible, both chores get to be a lot easier.
• Keep Ellen’s water tank full as often as possible. Players can refill the tank by holding SPACE BAR by any water source.
• Plant seeds as soon as you find them.
• Keep plants watered every day! Ellen will eventually unlock sprinklers, but use her water tank until then.
• Keep the foods that animals like in Ellen’s pockets at all time after gaining access to them. These foods are: potatoes, honey, strawberries, batteries, carrots, acorns, cranberries, wheat, and beets.
• Always keep one stack of all building materials that Ellen has access to in your backpack as well.
• Preserved food is the currency inNPLH, so make sure to preserve any extra veggies Ellen has as often as possible.
• Ellen can plant trees anywhere there is open land. Make sure to plant these as often as possible as apples, olives, oranges, and peach trees are all great sources of spare fruits and vegetables to make preserves and Pet Food. Trees take six days to begin bearing fruit, and they create a new fruit every day. Each tree holds up to five total fruit before it needs to be shaken to have room to create more.
• In combat, Ellen can use both her drill and her water hose at the same time, dealing double damage to each robot. Hold down both the left and right click to do it.
• Don’t be afraid to sleep! Even if it’s 9AM, Ellen will sleep through the night and move along grow times and processing. Ellen does not have to sleep, but some animals may not give their food items for the day if she does not.
• Fast travel has been added to the game. You can open the map at any time and travel to one of the many doors from anywhere. Head to the menu with TAB, then look for the MAP tab at the top of screen. Press MAP, and then press GLOBAL MAP. There will be doors all over the map; you can click on the ones outlined in green; they have been unlocked.

All Plants in No Place Like Home

At Grandpa’s Farm, Ellen can plant seeds for fruits and veggies in the squares of cultivated land called Plant Fields, flowers, and trees. Crops take three days to finish growing, while trees take six days to begin producing fruit. The seeds that give food items are as follows:

Flowers

There are also flowers, which can be grown in cultivated soil, raised boxes, and greenhouses. While some of these can be found out in the wild, the NPC Lilly in the Frozen Peaks sells each of these varieties for 5 Preserved Foods each. The varieties that Ellen can plant are:

Animals, Pets, and Friendly Robots

Ellen can build a variety of different buildings around Grandpa’s Farm in order to get different livestock as pets. Each of these critters will give an item every day if they are properly taken care of.

Animals

• Chickens – Eggs
• Ducks – Duck Eggs
• Pigs – Truffles
• Cube bots – Recycled Materials
• Robo llamas – Old Wood, Rubble, Rubber, Glass, or other building materials
• Cows – Milk
• Goats – Goat Milk
• Sheep – Wool

Pets

Pets are unique animals that Ellen can only get one of. These special pets live in special houses just for them, and each day they randomly offer up seeds, recycled materials, glass, preserved food, and other items.

• Dog – Found near Mark in the Village, feed a dog biscuit
• Cat – Found near, feed honey
• Racoon – Found in the Frozen Peaks up by the minecart, feed a garlic

There are several versions of many of the buildings for livestock, robots, and pets.

• Chicken Coop Level 1 – Can house 5 chickens
• Chicken Coop Level 2 – Can house 10 chickens and/or ducks. It also adds a fillable water and feed trough, which ensures that the chickens will to be happy without Ellen caring for them daily.
• Chicken Coop Level 3 – Can house 15 chickens and/or ducks. It also adds a fillable water and feed trough, which ensures that the chickens will continue to produce eggs without Ellen caring for them daily.
• Pigsty Level 1 – Can house 5 pigs.
• Pigsty Level 2 – Can house 10 pigs. It also adds a fillable water and feed trough, which ensures that the piggies will to be happy without Ellen caring for them daily.
• Pigsty Level 3 – Can house 15 pigs. It also adds a fillable water and feed trough, which ensures that the chickens will continue to produce truffles without Ellen caring for them daily.
• Cubebot Lodge – Can house 5 Cubebots.
• Llama Bot Home – Can house 3 to 5 llamas.
• Cowshed Level 1 – Can house 5 cows or sheep.
• Cowshed Level 2 – Can house 10 cows, sheep, and/or goats. It also adds a fillable water and feed trough, which ensures that the cows and goats will be happy without Ellen caring for them daily.
• Cowshed Level 3 – Can house 15 cows, sheep, and/or goats. It also adds fillable water and a feed trough, which ensures that the cows and goats will continue to produce milk without Ellen caring for them daily.
• Dog house – Can house one dog; there is currently only one dog in the game.
• Cathouse – Can house one cat; there is currently only one cat in the game.
• Raccoon house – Can house one raccoon; there is currently only one raccoon in the game.

Wild Animals

There are also wild animal friends that players can fix up the homes of and feed. The wild animals will live at the fixed up dens, but they will provide Ellen with seeds on occasion if she wants to stop by and say hello to them.

• Fox – The Village – Strawberries (give strawberry seeds)
• Deer – Lonely Hills – Acorns (give acorns)
• Fennec Fox – The Desert – Watermelon (give watermelon seeds)
• Boar – Frozen Peaks – Beets (give beetroot seeds)

Enemies and How to Defeat Them

• Smashers – These simple enemies attack slowly with a cone of red that belies where they will attack. Ellen can beat them without any special upgrades; just use water and/or the drill to defeat them.
• Armoured Smashers – Like the Smashers, these guys attack slowly and in a cone shape in front of them. In order to remove the armour and be able to damage them, Ellen first needs to vacuum it off of them.

• Chonker Smasher – The green attack robots are massive versions of the Smashers with the same attack pattern, but bigger. These massive enemies have a lot more health than their little red counterparts, but can be taken out with the hose and driller.
• Medibot – These are Smashers that are painted white and pale blue (with the same attack pattern). They have an aura around them that heals any enemies within range. Take these out first so they don’t undo the damage you have already done against its friends.

• Devastator – These robots look more like spiders, and they launch an acid blast every few seconds. These robots will also run from you when you get within melee range, so players will need to keep up in order to take them out. Stay out of their green circle AOE attack.
• Massive Devastator – These are similar to the Devastator, but they shoot very large AOE green missile attacks. When these robots die, they turn into several dozen tiny versions of Smashers. If Ellen isn’t ready to douse them with water as soon as the giant is defeated, the tiny ones will swarm and deal massive hits to her HP. This is a great enemy to make use of Super Chicken foods.

Types of Buttons in No Place Like Home

There are several types of buttons and interactive items inNo Place Like Homethat Ellen will need to push, pull, fill, or touch to be able to access an area.

Buttons: Walk up to these and press E when they are highlighted to press the button.

Water buttons: Fill up these blue buckets with water to activate them.

Boxes: Ellen will come across a number of these boxes all over the map.

She’ll need to use them to build pathways to different locations.

Puzzle Buttons: While almost all of the puzzle buttons have been removed fromNo Place Like Home, one remains in the Frozen Peaks. The solution is always nearby.

Blue Button Puzzles: Blue buttons always mean that there are four total buttons needed to open that door. The four buttons will always be close by to the door’s location.

Timed Buttons: There were quite a few of these in the Early Access versions ofNo Place Like Home, but there are only a few of these in the game now. To activate these buttons, Ellen needs to press all three of the yellow timed buttons before the green bar runs out.

Cut Wires: The last kind of puzzle that players will come across inNo Place Like Home is the broken or cut wire. It will look like a small cloud of electricity around a wire, and Ellen can fix it with a single battery.

Types of Trash

As Ellen moves through the world ofNo Place Like Home, you will find piles upon piles of trash leftover from the humans that abandoned the planet. Ellen can break these down with her drill which is controlled by left-clicking on the mouse.

With Ellen’s starting drill and vacuum, she can break down regular trash piles, organic trash piles, and old woodpiles.

With the first upgrade called Rubble, Ellen can break down the red-brown piles that give back Rubble.

The second drill upgrade will allow you to break down the purple Rubber waste piles to get Rubber. This will also give Ellen access to the Lonely Hills portion of the map.

The drill upgrade called Glass Waste is the third upgrade. This will give Ellen glass and give her access to the Frozen Peaks.

The final drill upgrade is for Electronic waste which can be found in the Desert mostly.

There is also Glue waste, which is pink and can only be found in Sunken City. There is no drill upgrade to break it, so Ellen has to use super chickens to get through instead.

Recipes

Recipes are concoctions that Ellen can make for quests or eat for herself to gain benefits. These are found in treasure boxes all over the map with a couple of notable exceptions.

Recipes that Ellen can’t eat:

• Pet Food – This recipe is made with any combination of foods that don’t make a recipe you have already found. Chickens, pigs, cows, dogs, cats, raccoons, and ducks all eat this food. This recipe is given to Ellen by Sir Cornelius, the Talking Chicken.

Recipes that boost damage

Recipes that boost damage:

• Tomato Soup – 4 Tomatoes – Ellen starts the game with this recipe
• Fries with Ketchup – 4 Potato, 2 Tomato – Grandpa’s Farm: This recipe is near Rudy; Ellen needs to use a box to get to this glowing box.
• Poached Peach – 1 Peach, 1 Honey – The Village: Head all the way to the north of this part of the Village and look for a yellow, glowing treasure box hidden behind a chain-link fence.
• Olivier Salad – 2 Tomato, 3 Corn, 1 Mayo – Lonely Hills, near the long train tracks that Ellen can’t access, to the east of the Outpost.
• Peperonata – 2 Tomato, 2 Pepper – Lonely Hills, right behind Frank.
• Potato Salad – 4 Potato, 2 Mayo – Frozen Peaks, near the house where the ice cream is.
• Veggie “Lasagne” – 2 Tomato, 2 Eggplant, 2 Wheat, 1 Cheese – Frozen Peaks, in the area behind Lilly. Look for orange luggage hidden among a stack of purple-colored shipping containers.
• “Borch” – 4 Beetroot – Frozen Peaks, behind the house north of the area where the potato salad is. Ellen will need to climb a ladder hidden around a nearby tree behind the house’s little garden.
• Onion Rings – 2 Onion – Frozen Peaks. This one is north of Jay, hidden behind a fence that can only be opened with the water button in the middle of the pond nearby.
• Hasselback Potatoes – 2 Potato, 1 Olive Oil Desert – The Desert, over by the large Smasher robot surrounded by little devastators in the first section of the desert area.
• Garlic Bread – 2 Wheat, 1 Garlic – Frozen Peaks; this recipe is hidden behind the four-part blue-button puzzle in the eastern part of the Frozen Railway section.

Recipes That Boost Sprint Speed

Recipes that boost sprint speed:

• Sunny Side – 2 Egg – Grandpa’s Farm: Behind Rudy is a ladder that goes up to a treasure box and a feather.
• Basic Stuffed Pumpkin – 2 Potato, 2 Tomato, 1 Pumpkin – Grandpa’s Farm; near where Cornelius appears after he leaves under the house’s porch.
• Simple Salad – 2 Tomato, 2 Lettuce – The Village: Near the entrance to the third Village section.
• Eggplant Fricassee – 2 Eggplant, 1 Mayo – The Village: This one is in the underground area straight south of the entrance right by the river.
• Fruit Salad – 1 Apple, 1 Peach, 4 Strawberry – The Village: When Ellen unlocks the western part of the Village, it will be hidden behind a chain-link fence.
• Popcorn – 2 Corn – Lonely Hills in the Great Quarry.
• Ultimate Fruit Salad – 1 Peach, 1 Orange, 1 Strawberry, 1 Blueberry – Lonely Hills, by the small pond near the Outpost where Harold hangs out.
• Poutine – 2 Potato, 2 Cheese. Frozen Peaks. The Poutine and Eggplant Casserole are located right next to one another. They are located in the middle of the Swamp area of the Frozen Peaks.
• Cereal Breakfast – 2 Corn, 2 Milk, 1 Blueberry, 1 Strawberry. Frozen Peaks, behind the massive devastator at the Radio Tower in a glowing treasure case.
• Eggplant Casserole – 2 Eggplant, 1 Cheese. Frozen Peaks. The Poutine and Eggplant Casserole are located right next to one another. They are located in the middle of the Swamp area of the Frozen Peaks.
• Cheese Fondue – 4 Cheese. Frozen Peaks. This recipe is near the beginning of the trail up to the Radio Tower in the swamp. Look for a glowing orange trunk at the break in the wall and walk into the gap in the wall. There will be a chest with this recipe and Cornelius will be there as well.
• Ice Cream – 2 Milk – 1 Honey – Frozen Peaks, inside of one of the houses.
• Goat Cheese Bruschetta – 2 Goat Cheese, 4 Wheat – I have yet to find this recipe in any of my playthroughs; however, you can make it at the kitchen station by combining the 2 goat cheese and 4 wheat together.

Recipes That Refill HP

Recipes that refill HP:

• Baked Apple – 1 Apple, 1 Honey – The Village, at the top of the tree with a ladder on it.
• Scrambled Eggs With Truffle – 4 Egg, 2 Truffle – The Village. There is a water button south of the entrance to Grandpa’s farm that opens up a path across a bridge. Follow the wooden path around until there is a gold, glowing suitcase and a feather. This recipe will be in the case.
• Truffle Surprise – 1 Eggplant, 1 Carrot, 1 Truffle – Lonely Hills to the south of the entrance to the area.
• Mashed Potatoes – 2 Potato – Ellen begins the game with this recipe.
• “Omelette” – 2 Egg, 2 Milk – Frozen Peaks; this recipe is hidden behind the timer puzzle on the way up to the minecart area.
• Pumpkin Soup – 2 Pumpkin, 1 Milk – Frozen Peaks. This recipe is located right at the start of the swamp, near the “Radio” Frozen Peaks fast travel point.
• “Omelette” with Jam – 2 Egg, 2 Milk, 1 Jam – Frozen Hills; this one is hidden under a lot of trash behind Lilly in the Nuclear Power Plant area.
• Apple Pie – 2 Apple, 2 Wheat, 1 Honey – Frozen Peaks. South of the bread location; this fenced area can only be reached by heading up past Jay and to the southeast of her, then climbing down into the area to press the button.
• Veggie Juice – 2 Carrot, 2 Tomato, 2 Pepper – Lonely Hills, near one of the trapped ducks near the Outpost.
• Bread – 2 Wheat – Frozen Peaks, near Jay.
• Pancakes – 2 Wheat, 2 Milk, 2 Egg – Lonely Hills. This chest is hidden across the pond; in order to get to it, Ellen needs to head up the hill and little and look for a broken electric line. Fix it with one battery and a platform will begin moving from one end of the pond to the other.

• Pizza “Margheritta” – 2 Wheat, 2 Tomato, 2 Cheese. Frozen Peaks. After Ellen breaks down the toxic ice block with the minecart, a new area will open up in the Power Plant location. It will be located behind a mushroom in this area.
• Cookie – 1 Milk, 1 Wheat, 1 Honey – Frozen Peaks, slightly to the southeast of where the path branches off to head up to the Radio Tower in the swamp.
• Watermelon Salad – 1 Watermelon, 2 Cranberry, 2 Blueberry – The Desert, right behind Janet.

Recipes That Summon a Super Chicken

Recipes that summon a Super Chicken:

• Stuffed Pumpkin Deluxe – 1 Pumpkin, 1 Egg, 1 Truffle, 1 Mayo – Lonely Hills, in the underground where Napoleon is, all the way to the south of the village area.
• Grilled Vegetables – 2 Eggplant, 2 Carrot – Lonely Hills. In the underground where Ellen places the Bulbulator in the giant hole, there will be a glowing chest with this recipe in it.
• Grilled Cheese – 3 Cheese, 1 Olive Oil – The Desert, in the northern-most part of the arid highway part of the desert.
• Ratatouille – 2 Eggplant, 2 Pepper, 2 Tomato, 2 Onion. Frozen Peaks, in the area hidden behind the toxic ice block. Look for a water button that is sectioning off a small part of this area with a chain-link fence.

NPCs and Their Blueprints

Ellen can buy recipes and blueprints from the NPCs that are scattered around the map. There are several locations for some of the characters, but I will list all the starting places of each of these.

Rudy is the first NPC that players will most likely meet. He’s a boy around Ellen’s age that hangs out near Grandpa’s farm, to the north of the llama building. He sells upgrades to Ellen’s tools, backpack, and more.

Jay is an ornithologist that hangs around the Frozen Peaks. Ellen can purchase some high tech stuff from her, such as a cheese maker, a loom, and some other upgrades.
