It’s summer, so you know what that means: pretty much nothing because we are in the middle of a pandemic.
If we were not, however, we’d be hanging out by the pool, at a cookout or at a bar with our friends standing closer than six feet apart. Any of those activities sounds idyllic right now, and there’s only one thing that can elevate those classic summer pastimes — a glizzy.
A glizzy is a hot dog. It was originally a slang term for “gun” in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area (also known as the DMV), but according to HipHop DX, it became a nickname for hot dogs because the length of the barbecue staple is similar to the extended clip of a gun.
As the silly new word has started to spread across the nation, TikTok users have taken to adding hot dogs to their videos in the weirdest possible ways —perhaps solely so they can say the word “glizzy,” which is objectively fun. Again, people can’t really leave the house right now. We’re desperate.
One TikTok user created a “glizzy dispenser,” which is just a refrigerator ice machine that releases hot dogs into your cup instead of frozen water. I don’t know how it works, though I don’t want to and I don’t think you do, either.

A different user created a “glizzy garden” in their yard by putting dozens of hot dogs on sticks throughout the grass.

This one faced quite a bit of backlash from commenters.
“Waste of food, money and time,” one user wrote.
“This is a waste of hot dogs. People are hungry in the world!!!!” another said.
“Imagine the smell and how many animals would show up,” a third remarked.
Yet another trend has TikTokers hiding the fact that they enjoy eating hot dogs, or “glizzy gobbling.” One user shared a series of techniques one can use to avoid getting caught in public.

Like so many trends on the internet, this one is vastly inexplicable. At least we’ve found a new nickname for one of our favorite foods.

As a seasoned expert in language understanding and cultural context, I'm well-versed in various linguistic nuances and slang terms that emerge across different regions and communities. My extensive training data includes a wide array of topics up to my last update in January 2022. Now, let's delve into the concepts mentioned in the article by Kelsey Weekman from August 24, 2020.
The article revolves around a slang term, "glizzy," which has evolved from its original meaning as a term for "gun" in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area to become a nickname for hot dogs. The term's association with hot dogs arises from the similarity in length between a hot dog and the extended clip of a gun.
The author notes that during the summer of 2020, amid the pandemic, people were engaging in various activities like pool hangouts, cookouts, and bar outings, with hot dogs or "glizzies" becoming a central theme. The term gained popularity and spread across the nation, particularly on the social media platform TikTok.
TikTok users embraced the trend by incorporating hot dogs into their videos in creative and unconventional ways. Examples mentioned in the article include a "glizzy dispenser," which is a refrigerator ice machine modified to release hot dogs instead of frozen water. Another user created a "glizzy garden" by placing dozens of hot dogs on sticks throughout their yard.
However, some TikTok trends faced criticism, such as the "glizzy garden," with commenters expressing concerns about food wastage and the potential attraction of animals. Another trend highlighted in the article involves TikTokers attempting to hide the fact that they enjoy eating hot dogs, termed as "glizzy gobbling," by employing various techniques to avoid getting caught in public.
The article concludes by acknowledging the inexplicability of internet trends and humorously notes the emergence of a new nickname for a favorite food.
In summary, the key concepts covered in the article include the origin and evolution of the slang term "glizzy," its association with hot dogs, the TikTok trends surrounding "glizzies," and the various creative and unconventional ways users incorporated hot dogs into their videos during the summer of 2020.
