Strider (2024)

This article is about the mob. For the enchantment, see Depth Strider. For playable DLC character in Minecraft Dungeons with a similar appearance, see :MCD:Strider Warrior.

Striders are passive mobs native to the Nether. They can walk/stride on lava and be saddled by the player. A warped fungus on a stick is needed to control a strider, similar to how a pig is controlled by a carrot on a stick.

Spawning[]

Striders can spawn in every Nether biome. Two to four striders spawn on spaces of lava that have an air block above. In Java Edition striders are the only passive mob in the Nether, so spawning attempts are made every 400 game ticks. In Bedrock Edition striders share the animal population cap with hoglins and their spawn rate depends on biome, being impacted by the ability of other mobs to spawn at a given coordinate.

For every strider that spawns, there is a 1 in 10 chance of an additional baby strider to spawn riding on top of the previous strider. This behavior is limited to one strider.[1] A baby strider on the adult strider continues to grow although it does not dismount the adult strider once it has grown up.

Zombified piglins have a 1 in 30 chance of spawning on top of a strider. If this happens, the strider spawns with a saddle and the zombified piglin spawns carrying a warped fungus on a stick. The zombified piglin does not despawn naturally, and does not count towards the mob cap. On Peaceful difficulty, the zombified piglin despawns immediately, leaving a saddled strider.[2]

If a strider spawns under lava, it rises out of the lava. in Bedrock Edition, baby striders spawn more commonly than adult striders do, including when spawned by a spawn egg.

Drops[]

Adult striders drop 2–5 string upon death. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 2–8 with Looting III.‌[JE only][3]

Striders wearing a saddle always drop the saddle upon death, regardless of if they spawn wearing it or if a player puts it on them. The only way to remove a saddle from a strider is to kill the strider. When an adult strider is killed by a player or tamed wolf, 1–2‌[JE only] / 1–3‌[BE only] experience is dropped.

Behavior[]

Lava does not damage striders. Unlike most mobs, striders can walk on top of lava without sinking. Upon being harmed by another mob, striders attempt to flee for a few seconds while making "retreat" noises. Striders are damaged by water, rain, and splash water bottles, which deal damage by 1Strider (4) per splash water bottle or half-second in water or rain, which can kill them. While in water, they slowly sink while taking damage. Striders still take damage from rain even if they are in lava. However, they are not harmed when standing in a filled cauldron. They also cannot be harmed by snowfall or snowballs. They take extra damage from freezing in powder snow.

Unlike piglins and hoglins, striders can exist safely in the Overworld, as long as they are kept away from water and rain. Unlike some other mobs, striders do not zombify when leaving the Nether. Striders outside of lava change to a dull purple color, change their expression to more of a frown, shiver, and their legs become slightly shorter. They also move slower when outside of lava.[4]

If a strider has the Speed effect applied to it, the strider moves faster on both land and lava (though its land speed is still considerably slower). If a zombified piglin is riding a strider, the strider pursues the player if the zombified piglin is angered.

Due to a bug,[5] striders that fall from a height take fall damage when landing in lava. A baby strider on an adult strider still grows into an adult. Apart from this, adult striders riding other adult striders do not spawn naturally. Baby striders not riding on an adult follow the closest adult strider.

Riding[]

Main article: Riding

Strider (7)

The player can ride on an adult strider using a saddle.

Similar to how pigs are controlled using a carrot on a stick, striders move forward automatically while their direction is influenced using a warped fungus on a stick, at a speed of 4.14m/s if on a flat lava surface (such as the Nether lava sea) or 1.74m/s if on land. They walk especially slowly against the lava flow direction.

Warped fungus on a stick can be used, causing the strider to boost and walk at a greater speed[more information needed] and taking 1 point of durability from the warped fungus on a stick. They also follow players holding a warped fungus or a warped fungus on a stick.

Unlike underwater boat, players riding striders into lava (for example, getiing into flowing-only from heights or horizons, static lava from horizons) do not dismount if the strider submerges into the lava, and striders quickly rise back up to the surface if this happens. However, players risk getting burned by the lava while submerged. However, in Java Edition, players cannot start riding a strider that is fully submeged within the lava.

A strider ridden into flowing lava slowly rises to the top. Fall damage does not affect striders that have dropped onto flowing lava, unlike the bug[5] for lava source blocks. When ridden over land, striders automatically walk up any one block high slope. They also cross any 1-wide block gap or air space that is only one block higher - diagonally up - when ridden directly upward and not completely sideways to the slope.

To safely dismount from a strider, a player who does not have fire resistance may face a solid block within reach before dismounting to dismount onto that block,[6] instead of at the strider's location (which is usually in lava[7]).

Striders can still be equipped with a saddle while another mob is riding it.

Breeding[]

Main article: Breeding

If striders are given warped fungus, they breed to create baby striders, granting the player 1–7 experience orbs. The parent striders have a cooldown of about 5 minutes before they can breed again. All babies obtained through breeding take 20 minutes to grow up. The growth of baby striders can be slowly accelerated using warped fungus; each use takes 10% off of the remaining time to grow up.

For example, 100 wheats and 50 cocoa beans, which in total could yield only 13.92 bone meal on average, could be crafted into 400 cookies to yield 48.57 bone meal on average.== Sounds ==== Advancements ==Husbandry;A Balanced Diet== Data values ===== ID ===java:bedrock:== History ==java betajava{{History|||snap=pre3|Cookies are no longer used to tame parrots. A bamboo shoot is the initial non-solid sapling form of planted bamboo.== Obtaining ==Bamboo shoots cannot be obtained through vanilla means. bedrock, they can be obtained through add-ons or inventory editing. java, they are completely unobtainable.=== Breaking ===Bamboo can be mined with any tool, but a sword breaks the block instantly, even with Mining Fatigue. Flowing water also breaks bamboo shoots, but not mature bamboo stalks.notelist=== Natural generation ===Bamboo generates in widely scattered single shoots within jungle biomes. Bamboo generates much more densely in the bamboo variants of jungles, covering large areas of the landscape. Bamboo does not generate in sparse jungles.=== Mob loot ===java, a panda drops 1 bamboo when killed. Looting does not affect the drop rate.bedrock, a panda drops 0-2 bamboo when killed. Looting increases the drop by 1 per level.=== Fishing ===Bamboo can be found while fishing in jungle biomes as a junk item.=== Chest loot ===bamboo== Usage ==When broken, any bamboo block placed or grown above it is also broken. A bamboo block drops itself as an item if a piston pushes it or moves a block into its space. When bamboo is first placed as a shoot it's not solid and can be destroyed by water flowing into it. After growing at least one block taller it becomes solid and can't be destroyed by water. To transform a bamboo shoot into a solid bamboo block place another bamboo on top of it.Unlike most plants, bamboo cannot be composted.=== Farming ===Bamboo can be planted on moss blocks, grass blocks, dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, gravel, mycelium, podzol, sand, red sand, suspicious sand, suspicious gravel, mud, bamboo shoot, or on itself. At default random tick speed (3), each plant grows on average every 4096 ticks. When bone meal is used on it, it grows by 1–2 blocks. Bamboo can grow up to 12–16 blocks tall. The top of a bamboo plant requires a light level of 9 or above to grow.Because bamboo breaks in almost the same way as sugar canes, a sugar cane farm can be easily adapted to this use. While water is not needed with such a farm, some spacing is recommended if the harvest is done manually as mature stalks are solid.=== Pandas ===Bamboo items are eaten by pandas and can be used to speed up the growth of baby pandas. Bamboo can also be used to breed pandas when at least 8 blocks of bamboo are within 5 blocks of the pandas, making the panda the only animal in the game to have extra breeding requirements. At this point, the playercan feed them bamboo and they mate to have a baby.=== Fuel ===Bamboo can be used as fuel for smelting. Each bamboo item smelts 0.25 items. Crafting two bamboo into a stick and using that as fuel is equivalent, smelting 0.5 items. Bamboo can be crafted into other items to increase its fuel efficiency.* By crafting 9 bamboo into 2 bamboo planks, 3 items can be smelted instead of 2.25, a 33.3% increase in efficiency.** bedrock, the fuel efficiency can be further doubled by crafting the bamboo planks into twice the amount of slabs.* java, by crafting 14 bamboo into 3 ladders, 4.5 items can be smelted instead of 3.5, a 28.6% increase in efficiency.=== Flower pots ===Bamboo can be placed in a flower pot, where it retains the design it has in its item form.=== Crafting ingredient ===crafting usage== Appearance ==The appearance of bamboo changes as it grows. When first placed, it takes the form of a small shoot, which has no hitbox. When it grows one block taller it grows to 2 pixels in length and width and the top block has leaves coming off it. At 3 blocks, the top 2 blocks have leaves and at 4 blocks the bamboo expands to 3×3 pixels. At 5 blocks tall, the top 3 blocks have leaves on them. As the bamboo grows, the leaves move up and stay at the top 3 blocks. Destroying a block of bamboo does not change the appearance of the blocks below it. Bamboo is oriented at a random position in the block that it is in.== Sounds ===== Bamboo ====== Bamboo Shoot ===== Data values ===== ID ===java:bedrock:=== Block states ===Block states== Achievements ==Zoologist== History ==javabedrockconsolefoot=== Bamboo shoot "item" ===== Issues ==Issue list== Trivia ==* Because bamboo grows quickly (on average 1 growth per 200 seconds), just 500 plants in an automatic farm produce more items than a hopper can collect (2.5 items per second). Unlike a normal hopper, it pulls items from containers much more quickly, cannot push items into containers, can collect item entities through a single layer of solid blocks and is locked and unlocked via activator rails.== Obtaining ===== Crafting ===Minecarts with hoppers can be retrieved by attacking them. By doing so it drop as an item and any other contents of the hopper are dropped as well.== Usage ==Minecarts with hoppers are placed similarly to other minecarts.A minecart with hopper pulls in items lying nearby (within a range slightly larger than the cart itself), or inside a container directly above the minecart, at a rate of 1 item every game tick (20 items per second), eight times as fast as a normal hopper. It also picks up items that are lying on a block directly above the track. It does not push items into containers, but a hopper underneath the track can remove items from a minecart with hopper on the track. Ordinary hoppers can also drop items into a minecart with hopper like other containers, at the normal speed of 2.5 items per second. In Bedrock Edition, a minecart with hopper on curved rail pulls in items in a hopper lying in front of its moving direction and 1 block above if hopper's output funnel is pointed downward and no block is below that hopper. The hopper can be disabled by passing over a powered activator rail, and can be reenabled by an inactive activator rail.An empty minecart with hopper can travel more than 85 blocks without stopping (as opposed to a normal cart going less than 12 blocks) from a dead stop using a 2 powered track starter even with another cart in front of them. However, the distance traveled by a minecart with hopper depends on the hopper's load. Using a 1 powered rail starter track, a minecart with an empty hopper travels 64 blocks until it stops (as opposed to an empty normal minecart going 8 blocks). The distance traveled diminishes non-linearly with increased hopper load; a minecart with a full hopper can travel only 16 blocks in this setup.Tutorials/Storage minecarts== Sounds ==Java:<br>Minecarts with hoppers use the Friendly Creatures sound category for entity-dependent sound events.Bedrock:== Data values ===== ID ===java:bedrock:=== Entity data ===Minecarts with hoppers have entity data associated with them that contain various properties of the entity.java:Entity formatbedrock:: See Bedrock Edition level format/Entity format.== Video ==<div style="text-align:center">I5etC7LeCac</div>== History ==java{{History||1.9|snap=15w43a|Loot tables are added; Trivia[]

Strider (46)
 • Striders had a fin in their texture file. The fin wasn't visible in-game and was removed in 20w15a.
 • If commands are used to saddle a baby strider, and the player rides the baby strider, the player takes fire damage due to not being high enough to avoid the lava.
 • Mojang added striders to the game as the solution to the community request for lava boats.[11]
 • At one point in the strider's development, before it was added to the game, a strider out of lava would retract its legs and start to take damage while bouncing around until it died, similar to how fish suffocate when out of water. This feature was discarded for being "too sad".[12]
 • Striders were planned to have their own unique armor and saddle, but this was decided against.[13]
 • Striders were initially going to have a long tongue with each they could eat things, not too dissimilar to a current frogs. The different items would all have various effects, such as swords hurting the strider, and TNT exploding.[14]
 • Part of the reason that striders drop string (from their bristles) was to answer the question of "how do piglins make crossbows?".[12]
 • The bobbing animation that the strider makes while walking was initially an accident. However, the developers thought it was "quirky and fun", so it was added as a feature.[12]
