Samuel Finnix (2024)

Biography[]

Dr. Samuel Finnix is one of the main characters in the first season. He is played by actor Michael Keaton and makes his first appearance during the debut of First Bottle. Finnix is a physician in a small town in Virginia called Finch Creek. He was originally from a town southwest of Pennsylvania where he met a girl in med school, who encouraged him to move with her to Finch Creek, a town even smaller than his home one. He ended up marrying this girl, but she eventually passed from ovarian cancer.

Samuel Finnix was introduced to OxyContin in the first episode by sales rep, Billy Cutler. He was suspicious of the drug at first, but like others, was manipulated into trusting and prescribing it. On top of that, he got into a car accident that broke four of his ribs. This led to Dr. Finnix developing a severe addiction to OxyContin.

Throughout the Series[]

Season 1[]

Samuel Finnix first appears in First Bottle, shown to be testifying against OxyContin in 2005 in court. Back in 1996, Sam is on his way to his Finch Creek clinic, where we works as a physician. Dr. Finnix is shown treating various patients with different conditions. He is shown to be a compassionate person, comforting one of his patients, a teenage girl who is insecure about not having got her period yet. After his shift is over, he even goes to a patient's house, an old woman who seems to have dementia. Dr. Finnix ensures that she has taken her pills and then goes home.

Sam then goes to a town gathering and speaks to several people there, a lot of who he seems to know, being the town's physician. He is then shown in court again in 2005, where he admits to prescribing OxyContin to several patients. Sam appears to be distressed when talking about it, upset over how many deaths were‎[1] caused.

Billy Cutler visits Dr. Finnix at his clinic one day, with a bucket of chicken to charm him. Sam shares some details about his life with Billy, like being from a town near Pennsylvania and how he came to Finch Creek. Billy then introduces Sam to OxyContin, making all the talking points he was advised to. Dr. Finnix was suspicious at first, but quickly became more convinced as Billy showed him the FDA label and even gave him a sample bottle of the drug.

Sam then visits Betsy Mallum that night, due to her severe back injury. After inspecting her, he tells her about the new drug he has been looking into and gives her the bottle he had, advising her to take only two 10mg pills a day. Betsy then confides in Sam about being gay and wanting to leave town so she can be herself. He is supportive and encourages her to go somewhere she can be herself. Will There Be a Season 2 of Dopesick?
