Abstract:
Rejection of the theory of ether is a natural consequence of the steady development of scientific thoughts conducted by scientists since1881. It is indeed true that the theory of ether was totally rejected only after the epoch-making discovery of the Special Theory of Relativity by Einstein in 1905. However, the ether theory was also rejected by Swami Vivekananda in 1895. But the same had gone unnoticed by the scientific community. After a gap of ten years, the theory was rejected by Einstein. The paper aims at unlocking the scientific insights hidden in the prognostication of Swami Vivekananda.

Academy of Research for Cultivation of Indian Sciences (ARCIS) is a vibrant knowledge-platform dedicated to intensive research on the Indian Sciences. James Clerk Maxwell and his contemporaries in the nineteenth century found it inconceivable that a wave motion should propagate in empty space. They therefore postulated a medium, which they called the ether, that filled all space and transmitted electromagnetic vibrations.
Michelson and Morley expected to find that two light beams arrived at the detector at different times. Instead they found that no matter which direction light traveled, it always moved at the same speed—indicating that the ether does not exist.
The theory met with increasing difficulties as the nature of light and the structure of matter became better understood. It was seriously weakened (1887) by the Michelson-Morley experiment, which was designed specifically to detect the motion of Earth through the ether and which showed that there was no such effect.
The ether does not exist at all. The electromagnetic fields are not states of a medium, and are not bound down to any bearer, but they are independent realities which are not reducible to anything else, exactly like the atoms of ponderable matter.
