Why do I feel weird after taking MiraLAX? ›

Nausea, abdominal cramping, or gas may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Miralax does have documented side effects, including nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea and flatulence.

However, one commonly prescribed laxative medication, MiraLAX, has been the focus of significant parental apprehension due to concerns that its active ingredient, polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350), may be linked to tremors, tics, obsessive-compulsive behaviors and aggression in children following its use.

Add the right dose to 4 to 8 ounces or 120 to 240 mL of water, juice, soda, coffee, or tea. Do not mix this medication with foods or other liquids. Do not combine with starch-based thickeners (e.g., flour, cornstarch, arrowroot, tapioca, xanthan gum).

Bulk-forming laxatives

Even slight amounts of dehydration can result in bloating, pain, and even a bowel obstruction (where stool becomes completely impacted). Some people do report common side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea from taking a bulk-forming laxative.

The side effects of Miralax are many and can be long-lasting as well. Since we find that most cases have that neurological stress and subluxation as a primary contributor, we strongly suggest scheduling a consultation and exam with your local PX Doctor as soon as possible.

Lemon juice – a cleansing way to encourage bowel movements is to try taking a glass of water mixed with the juice of half a lemon before bed and when you wake up. You may want to drink with a straw as you could find your teeth becoming sensitive after a regular course of lemon water.

Miralax can cause common side effects like nausea, cramping, and bloating. But if you have any symptoms of a more serious problem (like severe diarrhea, rectal bleeding, or signs of an allergic reaction), contact your healthcare provider immediately. These symptoms may indicate something more severe is going on.

The laxative is given routinely (and sometimes daily) to constipated children, yet it has never been approved for long-term daily use, neither in adults nor children. FDA has received reports of obsessive-compulsive behavior, tics, tremors and other neuropsychiatric side effects in children taking PEG 3350 laxatives.

Dulcolax and Miralax are both OTC laxatives used to treat constipation. Dulcolax is a stimulant laxative that works faster than Miralax. While Dulcolax tablets produce a bowel movement in 6 to 12 hours, the suppositories work much faster, producing a bowel movement within 1 hour.

Miralax, an osmotic laxative, typically takes 1 to 3 days to work. It's only available as a powder that you mix into a beverage. Compared to Dulcolax, Miralax can take longer to work. But it is much more tolerated and tends to cause fewer side effects than other laxatives.

These laxatives appear to be safe, but have only been studied in trials lasting about four weeks, Dr. Chey said, so for now, he recommends stimulant laxatives just for occasional or short-term use. There's more data supporting the safety of prolonged daily use of polyethylene glycol (Miralax), though.

Osmotic laxatives, such as Miralax or magnesium, are poorly absorbed substances that remain in the bowels and as a result pull water into the colon to make stools soft. Stimulant laxatives, such as Dulcolax and Senna, stimulate the muscles of the colon to squeeze or contract.
