With the Minecraft Warden finally being added to the game in the latest 1.19 update, we can confidently state that he is a force to be reckoned with. And unless you’ve spent the last couple of months staying strictly in the Overworld and not going mining at all (wow. Look at you all rich and stuff), you’ve probably run into him at least once.
The Warden is more than just a boss in Minecraft. With his own new biome, a specific way of spawning, and a ridiculous variety of buffed-up stats, he exists solely to ward players away from the ancient cities of the Deep Dark.
The Minecraft Warden is the Overworld’s latest big bad boss. In the same way that The End has the Ender Dragon, and the Nether has the Wither, the Overworld now has the Warden. And boy does whoever came up with his name deserve a promotion.
Who Is The Warden In Minecraft?
The Warden isn’t just some random hostile mob that spawns in the world. Infact, he can’t randomly spawn at all. There’s a certain to get him to climb out of the ground and basically guarantee your death at his hands.
He doesn’t spawn above ground. Infact, he only spawns in his own specific biome, the Deep Dark, which is found mainly in underground caves and ancient cities. (we’ll have a guide on the new biomes in 1.19 up soon.) This usually just means caves and other open underground areas with minimal lighting.
What Does The Warden Do In Minecraft?
The Warden isn’t your enemy. But that really doesn’t mean he’s your friend either. The official Minecraft Wiki refers to him as a natural disaster and we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
His job description is literally in the name. His only role in the game, so far, is Warden (I’m not sorry for that) you away from the Deep Dark and the treasures it hides.
But say you accidentally ended up triggering a Sculk Shrieker and summoning a Warden. What do you do? Well uhh, good luck, try to store your stuff in a chest where you’ll remember it and wait for the Warden to end your existence.

Where Does The Warden Spawn?
The Warden is one of Minecraft’s biome-specific mobs. This means that he spawns in his home biome, the Deep Dark, and only in the Deep Dark. To add to that, he doesn’t just spawn.
As if he isn’t ominous enough, the Warden is ‘summoned’ by sculk shriekers when they detect a player or any other entity at least four times. The Warden then proceeds to climb out of the ground and locks onto whatever triggered the shriekers, whether that be the player or any other mob.
On the other hand, if a Warden senses no disturbances around it for 60 seconds, it digs back into the ground and despawns.
Fighting The Warden In Minecraft
To be able to survive the Warden, you first need to understand that the Warden is in a class all his own. He isn’t your typical hunter mob that will stop chasing you, and while he can definitely be killed, it’s not easy.
What Makes The Warden So Strong In Minecraft?
The Warden is built different. Literally.
For context, here is a list of all the things that make him overpowered in every sense of the word.
- The Warden doesn’t have eyes. This means he doesn’t follow the traditional mob logic of “If it can’t see you, it can’t hurt you”. It uses a form of echolocation to sense the vibrations of players and entities around it and hunts them using that.
- It has 500 HP. That means a whopping 250 hearts. To put that into scale, you just have 10 hearts. So uh, good luck trying to kill it.
- Despite his massive size, he has the same hitbox and dimensions as the player. This basically means that wherever you go, he will follow.
- Wardens don’t get hurt by fire or lava. So while you’ll be afraid of burning to a crisp, he’ll still be chasing you all the same.
If you’re thinking “hey that isn’t so bad. It’s basically like a buffed-up Iron Golem.”, you’re wrong. In complement to the Warden being built different, it also hits different. How?
How Does The Warden Attack?
The Warden has two kinds of attacks. Two very strong, very broken, and very versatile attacks.
- The first attack is simple, it hits you. One basic melee attack that does 10 HP of damage on normal mode. That’s it, one hit and you’re dead. Oh wait, you’re playing on easy mode and it does only 8 HP of damage, cool!
The good news is that you survived; the bad news is that your shields are disabled for the next 5 seconds and you’re probably dead anyway. Oh and also it can attack again in 2 seconds. - The second attack hurts less. But that doesn’t mean it’s less of a problem. The Warden (in all of his broken glory) opens up his chest, charges up a sonic beam, and fires it at the player.
Thinking of hiding behind a wall to avoid it? Ha. You can’t. It goes through not one, not two, but a massive 15 blocks before it can’t hit you anymore. And your friends can’t tank it for you either. If the Warden fired it at you, it’s going to hit you and you only.

How To Survive The Minecraft Warden?
What I’m about to tell you now is the Warden’s only weakness. And while it isn’t the only way to escape him, it’s definitely the only probable one.
He can’t jump. Not for the life of him. What does that mean? That basically means you can just lead him into a hole two blocks tall and four blocks wide, and then just keep on running until you get out of range of his sonic boom.
Eventually, when you’re out of range and the Warden can’t track you anymore, he will just despawn until the Sculk Shriekers summon him again.
How to Defeat The Warden In Minecraft?
Technically, yes the Warden can be killed. Anything that has a health bar can be killed. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
With a massive 500 HP health pool, it boils down to around 40 fully charged hits from a netherite sword. On the other hand, the Warden just needs to hit you twice.

What Does The Warden Drop?
You’d think that for killing something like the Warden, you’d get like a special item or something? Or maybe a tonne of XP? Or even a cool achievement? Right? Wrong.
All you get from killing the Minecraft Warden is 5 XP and a sculk catalyst that it drops.

When Is The Warden Coming to Minecraft?
As of today, June 7th, 2022, the Warden is officially in Minecraft as a part of the game’s new 1.19 “The Wild Update.” Bringing with him the new “Deep Dark” biome, and a few other new mobs including both frogs and allays, you can hop (hehe) into the game right now and try to find him.
