Kinds of Kindness - Empatico (2024)

Activity Objectives
  • Students will learn about the three kinds of kindness - to themselves, others, and the world - and reflect on how they want to practice more kindness in their daily life
  • Then, students will play Kahoot! games to reinforce kindness skills, and engage in role-playing exercises, poll questions, and reflections

This activity supports the development of the following social-emotional skills: self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and self-management.

Introduce

Engage students in a discussion about what kindness means to them, and ways they have experienced kindness in the past. Then, introduce the three different types of kindness (towards yourself, others, and the world around us). Ask students to brainstorm examples for each type of kindness, and use the examples below for inspiration!

Kindness to Yourself

  • Take time to read a book
  • Forgive yourself for making mistakes because you are learning
  • Write down three things you are proud of (qualities, achievements, etc.)
  • Go for a relaxing walk when you feel overwhelmed

Kindness to Others

  • Invite a new student to sit with you for lunch
  • Help someone pick up items that they dropped
  • Ask someone how they are feeling if they look sad (and really listen to them)
  • Stand up for someone if you notice they are being treated unkindly

Kindness to the World

  • Pick up litter on the ground
  • Water a plant
  • Remember to recycle
  • Reuse plastic materials instead of throwing them away

Learn

Play the Kahoot! game below with your students to learn more about the three different types of kindness. This game contains slides about different ways to practice kindness, short role-playing exercises, poll questions, and reflection prompts.

Reflect

Guide your students in a post-activity reflection by asking the following questions:

  • Why is it important to practice all three types of kindness?
  • Which type of kindness is hardest for you to practice? Why?
  • How do you practice kindness in your daily life? How could you improve?
  • When we are trying to show kindness to another person, how do we know which actions they will appreciate?
