Every year, without fail, there is a clogged toilet at a party. Why? According to American Society of Plumbing Engineer, this happens “because during the large gatherings you may be preparing large amounts of food and/or you will have more guests. Both of these combined will work your plumbing system harder than usual.” The huge surge of bathroom usage in a house, and maybe a mischievous kid caught stuffing the toilet with paper, can easily lead to a backed up and clogged the toilet.

Unclogging a toilet without a plunger or snake can be an easy task as long as you have two common household cleaners on hand. This baking soda and vinegar trick will keep you from getting caught with an out of order bathroom when you have dozens of people in your house.

Baking soda and vinegar, when mixed together, can form a chemical reaction that looks sort of like an eruption. This chemical reaction can help clear your toilet and any pipe clogs that you might have. Follow the steps below carefully:

Step 1: Evaluate how bad the clog is:

Tip-For a minor clog, you can add all of the baking soda and vinegar at once. For a more extreme backup, you will have to add the ingredients in smaller stages.

Step 2: Pour the baking soda into the toilet bowl:

Start with about ¼ to ½ of a cup at first. Remember, the more baking soda you have, the bigger the reaction will be.

Step 3: Pour the same amount of vinegar into the bowl.

Wait a couple of minutes for the baking soda and vinegar to react before moving on to the next step.
Tip- The reaction will start to happen as soon as the vinegar and baking soda mix. Expect a good amount of foaming before the reaction starts to settle down.

Step 4: Pour a full pot of hot water into the toilet to help push the clog out
Step 5: The clog should be cleared and the toilet should be ready to use again!

Repeat the above steps as many times as necessary until the toilet is working smoothly. If you are unable to remove the clog from the toilet, it may be time to call in a professional.
