Kinetic means “togetherness due to movement and energy” and is used to describe Kinetic Sand because, unlike the sand at the beach, Kinetic Sand sticks together when force is applied to it. When a liquid is added to cornstarch it starts to become thicker, similar to how sand becomes heavier with water at the beach.

To make this kinetic sand recipe, just remember the ratio 5:3:1. That way, whether you have a measuring cup, or just a little container or scoop, you can get the ratio right. It's 5 parts sand, to 3 parts cornstarch (you can also sub flour for the cornstarch), and 1 part oil.

We think this odd behavior happens because the polymer coating makes the sand stick to itself. So as a grain of sand moves—even a little—it pulls other grains along with it.
