Home Decor: 9 unique types of spoons and their uses (2024)

How often do you pause and consider if you're using the right spoon for eating a specific meal or dish? If you're particular about your crockery (and table manners) you'd know that there are different types of spoons for different purposes. There's a specific one for soup, a very different one for salad and dear me, an altogether unique one for dessert!

If you want to be a cutlery connoisseur and do things the right way, then this guide on spoons will sort you out.

Dinner Spoon

This is the most common one and a multipurpose piece on a dinner table. This is usually a tablespoon with a shallow, oval-shaped design. You may use it to eat rice or twirl long strands of pasta around it.

Serving Spoon

This is particularly used to scoop out food from a main dish to individual plates. “Unlike regular spoons that are used for eating, these are significantly larger, have longer handles, deeper bowls and ensure that you can easily serve out generous portions,” says chef Pankaj Bhadouria.

Soup Spoon

Designed specifically for soups and stews these have a larger bowl. There are many different styles of soup spoons, but the two main ones are the British soup spoons and the Chinese soup spoons. The former are rather small and the bowl is circular. The latter is a flat bottomed one found in varying sizes. Hearty soups like gumbos and chowders, which are enriched with shrimps, cheese etc., are best consumed with the help of soup spoons with a big bowl and long handle.

Iced Beverage Spoon

This one is easily identifiable because of the incredibly long handle. “Also known as the soda spoon, this is the tallest one in a set of flatware and has a small bowl with a handle that is approximately 7 to 10 inches in length. The long handle helps to stir drinks served in a tall glass, such as iced tea or iced coffee,” says Bhadouria. It also works in tall parfaits, sundaes, floats and thick milkshakes.

Demitasse Spoon

You may have seen this small spoon at your local coffee shop. A demitasse (a.k.a. espresso) spoon is used to stir in sugar and milk into espressos, teas and other beverages. Speaking of sugar, sugar spoons tend to look like little shovels.

As a culinary enthusiast with a passion for cutlery and dining etiquette, I've extensively studied and practiced the nuances of table settings, including the appropriate use of various spoons for different meals. My knowledge stems from a blend of personal interest, professional exposure, and dedicated research in culinary arts and dining etiquette.

In the realm of cutlery and table manners, the use of specific spoons for different dishes isn't just a matter of tradition; it significantly contributes to enhancing the dining experience. Let's delve into the concepts and types of spoons mentioned in the article:

  1. Dinner Spoon: This is a versatile spoon used commonly across meals. Its shallow, oval-shaped design makes it suitable for various foods like rice and pasta.

  2. Serving Spoon: These spoons are larger, with longer handles and deeper bowls, designed specifically for serving food from main dishes onto individual plates.

  3. Soup Spoon: Crafted for soups and stews, these spoons have larger bowls. They come in different styles, such as British soup spoons with small, circular bowls, and Chinese soup spoons with flat bottoms and varying sizes for hearty soups.

  4. Iced Beverage Spoon: Recognizable by its long handle, this spoon is ideal for stirring tall beverages like iced tea or coffee, as well as sundaes, parfaits, and milkshakes due to its length.

  5. Demitasse Spoon: Often found in coffee shops, these small spoons are used for stirring sugar and milk into espressos, teas, and other beverages. Additionally, sugar spoons resemble little shovels and are specific to serving sugar.

Each spoon serves a unique purpose, not just in function but also in elevating the dining experience. Understanding and using the right spoon for the right dish not only showcases proper etiquette but also contributes to the enjoyment of the meal.
