RAJAHMUNDRY: A goldsmith from East Godavari district has made it to the Guinness World Records after he carved out of wood the world’s smallest spoon. Donthamsetti Balanageswara Rao, resident of Mandapeta town, chiselled out of a small piece of wood a spoon measuring just 3.09 mm. This, according to the Guinness World Records, is the smallest wooden spoon ever made in the world.
The wooden spoon weighing 0.479mg Rao sent his entry to the Guinness World Records in January this year.
He recently received a communication from the publishers of the Guinness World Records that his entry has been accepted. It has also been acknowledged on its website.
The goldsmith told TOI that Guinness had sent a team to verify his claim. After a thorough verification, the entry was included, he said. “Donthamsetti is a gold worker by profession. It is part of his life making small things. This is why this miniaturist pursued this record title. It took two hours and 13 minutes to make this wooden spoon,” the Guinness entry reads. Rao said the feat has been videographed live and photographed continuously and sent to the publishers. “I have followed all the guidelines. The organizers asked me to measure its length and breadth. I was also told to weigh the spoon in a micro weighing machine in a lab,” he said. ‘Interest in miniature art drove me to this feat’ He said he later visited the office of the legal metrology department for certification. The spoon weighs less than half a milligram (0.479 mg). Explaining how he took to carving out miniature objects, Rao said he had developed the hobby while he was a child after seeing a rice grain with engravings and portraits. “Being a goldsmith, I use special magnifying glass while making fine jewellery. This along with the interest in miniature arts has driven me to achieve this feat,” he told TOI hoping that his entry into Guinness World Records would bring the much-needed recognition to his conservative town.
