Gordon Ramsay's tragic childhood from abusive dad to spending nights in care (2024)

It doesn't take much trawling through Gordon Ramsay's social media to see he's a family man.

The 54-year-old celebrity chef has five children with his wife Tana, 47; Megan, 23, Matilda, 19 (who's known as Tilly), twins Jack and Holly, 21, and one-year-old Oscar James, and his kids are no strangers to being in the spotlight alongside him.

While his eldest daughter Megan has travelled the world with Gordon as he shoots his cooking shows, TikTok star Tilly has just joined this year's Strictly Come Dancing, and Holly has been Gordon's plus one at high-profile events like the BAFTAS and GQ.

Royal Marines' trainee Jack tends to keep a lower profile than his sisters, while little Oscar is regularly the star of Gordon's Instagram these days.

Gordon clearly takes his involvement in his children's lives seriously, and he previously opened up about the inspiration behind his caring and hands-on parenting, attributing it to his own less-than-perfect childhood.

In an interview with Fred Sirieix on the Oh La La podcast, Gordon described how his own father, who died in 1997 aged 53, had been such a bad parent to him growing up that he promised himself he would give his children a better life.

He said: "I didn't want to turn out like my dad.

"I didn't want to live in a council house and put my kids to school with second-hand clothes.

"You strive to better yourself."

Gordon said he was loved by his mother and "I think loved by my father" but he was "desperate to get out the sh**hole I was in".

The self-made celebrity chef said he particularly struggled to get along with his father, Gordon Ramsay Sr, because of the favouritism he showed towards his brother Ronnie.

"I had a tough relationship with dad," said Gordon. "Because... my little brother was his favourite."

The comments followed a previous interview for CNN in 2007, in which he had opened up about his "less than perfect role model" of a father.

Gordon said: "I watched how he battled alcoholism and how he became terribly violent with my mum, to the point where she feared for her life.

"Every time he got violent, any present that my brother, sisters, or I had given mum would be smashed, simply because he knew it belonged to her.

"There were instances when the police were called to take him away; mum was taken to the hospital while we kids were taken to a children's home."

Gordon described how he moved around "more homes and schools than I can remember" as a child because his Dad would regularly get fired over a fallout at work.

Talking about his relationship with his own children, Gordon said: "I could never see myself behaving the way my father did when I was a child.

"I want to be a role model for my children and have them look up to me."

He added: "No child should ever have to live in fear in their own home.

"A home should be a place where you feel safe and loved; when I was a kid, our home was anything but that."

On the Oh La La podcast podcast, which aired last year, Gordon told Fred he was especially excited to take more of a main role in baby Oscar's life, after regretting being too busy when his now adult children were younger.

"I am convinced I am going to spend more time with Oscar," he said, adding: "I am excited to be more hands-on."
