A doughnut or donut (/ˈdoʊnət/) is a type of pastry made from leavened fried dough. It is popular in many countries and is prepared in various forms as a sweet snack that can be homemade or purchased in bakeries, supermarkets, food stalls, and franchised specialty vendors.

Dictionaries and popular style guides like the AP Stylebook list doughnut as the preferred spelling. However, donut is a common variation in the United States. It's less common in official settings, but is still fully acceptable.

The Doughnut emoji 🍩 depicts a doughnut, a commonly eaten baked good. It is commonly used to represent real and metaphorical doughnuts, breakfast, bakeries and baked foods, snacks, coffee breaks, The Simpsons, and negative stereotypes of police officers.

The “nu*t” could be because the olykoeks looked like crunchy, wrinkly walnuts once they had been fried, whereas other sources say that it was because bakers added nuts to the dough to add flavour.

Most dictionaries enter donut as a variant of doughnut. The spelling of donut without the -ough has appeared in enough written sources (and been made popular by brands such as Dunkin' Donuts) that it has become an accepted spelling.

The “nu*t” part is actually a different way of saying “a small lump.” Originally, the name of the treat was dough boy. Donut is a simplification of the original spelling, and as such, it's completely in the spirit of the American version of the English language.

Gray is more frequent in American English, whereas grey is more common in British English. The varying usage of both grey and gray extends to specialized terms such as animal species (gray/grey whale) and scientific terms (gray/grey matter). Greyhound is an exception, which has a different derivation than the color.

Jelly doughnuts are traditionally a yeast doughnut without a hole in the middle, as the fruit-filling gets piped into the center.

Old-fashioned cake doughnuts were called sometimes called "fry cakes" back then: Doughnuts are made of pieces of raised dough, cut into circular pieces and set to rise. After rising they are dropped into a kettle of hot fat, where they puff up into balls and become brown on the surface.

Edge the alternative spelling "donut" was invented in the 1920s when the New York–based Display Doughnut Machine Corporation abbreviated the word to make it more pronounceable by the foreigners they hoped would buy their automated doughnut making equipment.

I've seen it spelled both ways. A doughnut is made from dough, so that makes sense. Krispy Kreme spells their product doughnuts. Winchell's and Dunkin' Donuts spell it donut.

The difference between these spellings, anyway, is given by the area where they are used. More exactly, "donut" is the US spelling and "doughnut" is the spelling used more frequently in the UK. Apart from this linguistic subtlety, there is no difference in the meaning of these nouns.

Here in the UK and in Canada, 'doughnut' is more common, whereas in America 'donut' is usual, but the other spellings are still sometimes seen. Doughnut is still more common in the United States. Donut caught on because of Dunkin' Donuts but most publications still prefer doughnut.
