History

In 1964, founders Leroy and Forrest Raffel decided they wanted to provide something different and came up with the concept of providing fresh sandwiches for those who wanted something quick, other than burgers. The co-founders opened a sandwich shop in Boardman, Ohio. This shop served hot, freshly sliced roast beef sandwiches as fast as serving any burger. This restaurant initially served only roast beef sandwiches, potato chips, and soft drinks. The name “Arby’s” comes from the co-founders, the Raffel brothers, “RB”.

This new fast food concept quickly expanded and the first franchise opened in Akron, Ohio in 1965. The establishment underwent rapid expansion during the 1970s. It also created several new menu items during this time. In 1971, the store debuted its new roast beef sandwich. The Arby-Q sandwich made its debut in 1977. Other new items included the beef and cheddar sandwich, shakes, and curly fries. In 1981, chicken was introduced to the menu. In 1991, the chain became the first fast food restaurant to provide a “lite” menu with sandwiches and salads with less than 300 calories. In 1994, the restaurant was also the first fast-food establishment to ban smoking in all of its locations.

Arby’s Restaurant Group, Inc. is a privately-held company and is one of the largest fast food restaurants in the United States. In 2008, the company merged with Wendy’s International, Inc. The combined company was then called Wendy’s/Arby’s Group, Inc. In 2011, Arby’s split from Wendy’s and was then acquired by Roark Capital Group. Roark Capital Group owns 81.5 percent of the company. Wendy’s Company owns the other 18.5%. The company’s headquarters is located in the city of Sandy Springs, in the state of Georgia. Paul Brown is the current Chief Executive Officer of the company.

The chain has restaurants in every state except Vermont and Rhode Island. There are also international locations. The international locations include Canada, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The establishment also had locations in other countries such as Australia, Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, Chile, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait, Philippines, Malaysia, Portugal and the Bahamas.
