How Hot Is the Chocolate Bhutlah?

The Chocolate Bhutlah is considered to be one of the hottest peppers in the world, with some claiming it feels even hotter than the famed Carolina Reaper. It is said to top out at 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Units on the official Scoville scale. When it comes to hot peppers, this pepper delivers incendiary heat.

What Does A Chocolate Bhutlah Look Like?

This pepper is a cross between a Bhut Jolokia (ghost pepper) and a Douglah peppers. A mature pod of the Chocolate Bhutlah pepper has an earthy, chocolate brown color spread smoothly over its wrinkled texture. The pepper appears elongated and has an average size.

What Is Chocolate Bhutlah Used For?

Apart from being used in tasting challenges, Chocolate Bhutlahs are added in controlled quantities in the likes of soups, sauces, stews, and salsas. I particularly enjoy them for hot sauces and dehydrating to make chili flakes or powders.

What Does Chocolate Bhutlah Taste Like?

Like most chilies of its kind, the Chocolate Bhtulah has fruity and floral notes initially. All of that, however, quickly transforms into a blazing heat that will soon enough numb your tongue and throat, leaving it void of taste if you have too much of it at a time.

Where To Buy Chocolate Bhutlah?

You will find many sources selling Chocolate Bhutlah peppers and its seeds for brave individuals, like yourself, to try. You will find them easily with a simple online search. Check out my Chili Pepper Resources page for seed, plant and pepper resources.

What Is A Chocolate Bhutlah Substitute?

In terms of the heat level, the Trinidad Scorpion, Komodo Dragon, and the Carolina Reaper have similar heat levels, lying between the 1,400,000 to 2,000,000 range. Any of these would be a suitable substitute.

I tried a dehydrated one and it was the hottest pepper I’ve ever ate. However, it has a great flavor that causes pain from the heat and the eye leak with tears, and it cleans out the sinuses.

This review weighed in my decision to buy these seeds last spring. I will be growing them again, mine produced pretty good for our short season in Canada. They are definitely hot but have a better flavor than reapers in my opinion. I just set up a ferment last night, I'm trying to keep the dark color for the sauce, I might try to make black garlic to achieve this. Thanks again, Mike.

  • Genetic Makeup: It's a crossbreed between the Bhut Jolokia (ghost pepper) and Douglah peppers. This parentage contributes to its intense heat.

4. Flavor Profile:

  • Initial Notes: Like its chili brethren, the Chocolate Bhutlah starts with fruity and floral notes that may lull you into a false sense of security.
  • Transformation: Brace yourself—the initial charm swiftly morphs into an inferno of heat, numbing the tongue and throat. Moderation is key unless you're ready for a taste bud apocalypse.

5. Where to Find:

  • Accessibility: For brave souls like yourself, a simple online search will reveal sources selling Chocolate Bhutlah peppers and seeds. Check out dedicated chili pepper resources for a spicy treasure trove.

6. Substitutes:

  • If you're on the lookout for alternatives with similar heat levels, consider the Trinidad Scorpion, Komodo Dragon, or the Carolina Reaper. They fall within the 1,400,000 to 2,000,000 SHU range.

7. Community Feedback:

  • First-Hand Experiences: Comments from fellow chili enthusiasts share their encounters with the Chocolate Bhutlah, ranging from chest pains to tears and sinus-clearing experiences. It's a pepper that commands respect.
