On the long journey to the Emerald City, Dorothy and Toto are joined by the Scarecrow, who wishes he had brains; the Tin Woodman, who longs for a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, who seeks courage.

The lesson from of The Wizard of Oz is to stop trying to be the person you think everyone expects you to be, and simply be who you are. To frame it in language that I've used here recently, the movie is about discovering and using your unique voice.

To save his life, Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, was forced to turn him into tin.

In the story, the Tin Man is a former woodsman who was turned into a living statue made of tin after a wicked witch cast a spell on him. He is kind and gentle, but lacks a heart and is unable to feel emotions. Dorothy and her friends help him find a heart, and in the process, he learns to love and care for others.

“Why do you want water?” he asked. “To wash my face clean after the dust of the road, and to drink, so the dry bread will not stick in my throat.” They left the cottage and walked through the trees until they found a little spring of clear water, where Dorothy drank and bathed and ate her breakfast.

We're no shrinks, but it seems like Dorothy could be suffering from HPD, a disorder that manifests itself through attention-seeking behavior, intense theatricality, and a shallow array of emotions.

But in both cases, Dorothy is instantly hailed as a conquering heroine, just as the Wizard was when he touched down in Oz. The message is that people will march behind any authority figure who makes a splash, however undeserving they may be.

As conceived and written by Lyman Frank Baum in 1900, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was a political allegory of turn-of-the-century America. Written in the waning days of the Populist movement of the late 1800s, it was the story of the sad collapse of Populism and the issues upon which the movement was based.
