Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. Hannah "Annie" Elizabeth Rolinson Gale (December 29, 1876 – August 7, 1970) was a British-born Canadian politician who was one of the first women to hold an elected political position in Canada.

The school was named for Annie Gale, born Hannah Rolinson on Dec. 29, 1876, in Netherton, England. She married William John Gale, a civil engineer, on Feb. 9, 1901.

John Gale is the younger brother of Henry Gale and helped Henry run their family farm. Annie was a simple farm maiden, she was adventurous, spirited, kind, and compassionate.

Some believed Aunt Em's alter ego was to be Glinda, the Good Witch of the North but the studio opted to use different actresses for each role. The reason was they wanted someone younger looking to contrast the good witch from the bad witches, although Billie Burke, who played Glinda, was only eight years younger.

The protagonist of the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is eleven-year-old Dorothy Gale. Dorothy's last name holds a particular metaphorical significance. "Gale" is a nautical term for strong winds.

Baum never states Dorothy's age, but he does write in The Lost Princess of Oz that she is a year younger than Betsy Bobbin and a year older than Trot, whose age was specified as 10 in Ruth Plumly Thompson's The Giant Horse of Oz, putting her at age 11 by the time she comes to live in Oz.

In the film, Dorothy is supposed to be 12 years old. Dorothy does not sing in the Oz books. In the Oz books, the fate of Dorothy's parents is never revealed. In Wicked, it is said Dorothy's parents died in a boating accident and she was then adopted by Uncle Henry and Aunt Em.

She was eventually taken back to her parents' world by her parents' colleague Karen Chapman, where she dropped her at the Gales' farmhouse in Lucas, Kansas, having them raise her as their own daughter.
