I really liked Mohg as a boss so I decided to start a new build as a Blood Priest, using all the shortcuts and skips to rush my way all the way up to the real Mohg fight. Hard leveled Arcane, Dragon Communion Seal, all that good stuff.
After getting all the incantations and his weapon and then playing through the last couple areas and getting in a couple hours of duels at Main Academy Gate, it was frankly....not really worth it.
I'll talk a little a bit why for each of the spells. I'll skip his weapon because that's a separate topic, and I'll skip Bloodflame blade since it falls into the 'spellblade' type category and also has bugged arcane scaling with the DCS.
All the blood spells share the same distinction/weakness of being really slow with somewhat underwhelming effects. They're not *weak* per say, but considering how all of the main ones are locked behind the last 40-50% of the game's normal progression route, you'd expect them to be at least on par in terms of power with what Mohg himself uses. Yes, they're still slow even with Radagon Icon and Azur Staff on.
Swarm of Flies: this one is the earliest one you can get, and it's probably the best one for pve. Builds bleed really quickly, fp efficient, pairs well with Reduvia. Pvp its ok, but again, its slow, telegraphed, and the tracking is pretty easy to run circles around of.
Bloodflame Talons: Its blood flavored combustion. Noticeably benefits the most from increased spell casting speed, but ultimately its a point blank aoe spell meant for trading. I wish the claw swipe itself did damage like Mohg's, but it doesn't. You can free aim it, and its arc can be spun around pretty quickly to catch people in pvp rolling into you/past you. But if you're gonna using spells to point blank trade someone, Catch Flame is literally that, and cheaper. I've probably hit the most amount of people with this spell in duels, though I reckon part of it is also people are just not accustomed to seeing it.
Bloodboon: the hardest blood incantation to get is disappointingly the worst, both in pve and pvp. It's painfully slow. The tracking is not great when locked on, which implies its meant to be free aimed, akin to Great Chaos Fireball back in DS. In which case, when free-aimed, it becomes marginally better. You can use it for funky area denial shenanigans in pvp, and pair it with Bloodflame talons for the roll catch. But again, its so slow, and once you've gotten it off once/twice, a smart opponent is going to figure out really soon to run up and smack you out of your cast. In pve, there's just better, more efficient options for area aoe.
All this sounds like I'm sh*tting on the blood spells, but I'm not. I really wanted to love them because thematically thrusting your hand into the void to spray blood on your foes is so cool and screams Lovecraft. But all the spells need adjustments and love, most notably an increase in cast time.
I'll try these in invasions to see how they hold up in that aspect.
