When it comes to Ketchup you're in one of two camps: the bottle must be stored in the fridge or the bottle is better off in the cupboard.

Either way, it's an ongoing debate that has caused contention in many households up and down the country for years, and we've never had a concrete answer either way. Until now...

A new survey from Which? questioned consumers on how they store their sauces and condiments, and discovered a lot of confusion, misinformation and downright bad habits – including ones that could be putting 0ur health at risk.

They spoke to three food experts – a public analyst, a special adviser on food and drink, and registered dietitian Dr Sarah Schenker – to get the lowdown about what we really should and shouldn't be keeping in the fridge, and the answers might surprise you.

Ketchup

Let's just start with the one we all really want to know about: ketchup. Many people believe that this should be kept in the fridge once opened and that's totally valid as a Heinz Tomato Ketchup bottle specifies: Refrigerate once open and eat within eight weeks.

However, the experts say there’s actually no need to keep ketchup in the fridge. Not only does it contain vinegar, but tomatoes are naturally acidic, and this helps to preserve the product in ambient (room temperature) conditions.

Brown Sauce

Ketchup's old-school cousin, brown sauce is another one you're likely to find sitting on the condiments shelf of the fridge. However, this is another one that we're doing wrong.

The label advises: No guidance about refrigeration, just ‘Best before: see cap’ (HP Sauce). But the experts say, HP Sauce contains preservative ingredients including both malt vinegar and spirit vinegar, so it’s fine to keep in the cupboard, along with your ketchup.

Mint Sauce

The best friend of our Sunday roast, mint sauce is a staple with lamb and vegetables but, let's be honest, we don't use it for much else.

So the good news is that it no longer needs to take up precious room in your fridge as – though the bottle often says use within four weeks (Colman’s Mint Sauce) – the experts say that after mint, the second most abundant ingredient in this is spirit vinegar.

This acts as a preservative, so there’s no need to keep it in the fridge, leaving more space for condiments that need chilling. It is worth noting though, that mint sauce has less of a shelf life than ketchup or brown sauce, so it can't be left languishing in the cupboard for years on end.

Pickle

Though not as common as the above, pickle is still a nostalgic staple in the kitchens of people up and down the country. If you haven't tried it, do yourself a favour and add it to a cheese sandwich stat.

The bottle advises that once opened, keep in the fridge and use within six weeks but the experts advise that it's actually fine to keep in the cupboard due to the preservatives in it, including vinegar. The main problem with pickles is that stray crumbs of bread, or morsels of food such as cheese, can contaminate the product when you stick a knife in.

Mustard

If you're keeping mustard in the fridge then that's fine, but the experts say that you'd also be fine to store it in your cupboard.

The preservatives in most mustard (French, Wholegrain, Dijon and English) make it fine to keep it in a cupboard, although keeping it in the fridge may help to preserve its kick and punchiness for longer.
