Why does it get so dark so early?
In the summer months the top of the Earth tilts and faces the sun which gives us those glorious long days of sunlight. In the winter (now) it switches and the Northern Hemisphere points away from the sun giving us shorter days and that dreaded early darkness.
Why it's so dark in the morning is a matter of the Earth's rotation on its axis (which is at a tilt of 23.5 degrees) around the sun.
First comes the earliest sunset, in early December. Then there's the winter solstice half a month later—on December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere—the day with the fewest minutes of daylight. Finally, another two weeks later, in early January, we get our murkiest morning—the latest sunrise.
Due to the winter solstice, daylight hours in the northern hemisphere are reduced, get shorter, as we approach 6pm. After the time change, 5pm becomes the time towards which daylight hours get shorter, until the point is reached where it's dark at 5pm.
The discrepancy is caused by the Earth's elliptical orbit around the Sun.
Daylight Saving Time ends with the Fall Back. On the first Sunday in November, people turn their clocks back by one hour at 2 a.m. The extra hour of daylight is returned to nighttime which is why it gets darker earlier in the evening in fall and winter.
Blame our elliptical orbit
The discrepancy is caused by the Earth's elliptical orbit around the Sun. In early January the Earth is closest to the Sun and as a consequence, it is moving fastest in its orbit.
After the winter solstice we will start seeing more daylight by an average of two minutes and seven seconds every day. The date of the winter solstice can change from December 20-23, but usually lands on 20 or 21.
When is the winter solstice in 2023? In 2023 the winter solstice will occur on Friday 22 December. The winter solstice occurs in December, and in the northern hemisphere the date marks the 24-hour period with the fewest daylight hours of the year.
Since the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun in December, it receives less sunlight during the course of a day. At the solstice, the North Pole's tilt away from the Sun is greatest, so this event marks the shortest day of the year north of the equator.
What month does it stay lighter longer?
After Dec. 21, our daylight hours will begin to grow longer, at first slowly as a matter of seconds, and then by the spring equinox in March, peaking at around three and half minutes per day.
The reason for the discrepancy in time is twofold. First, the Earth is tilted 23.5° on its rotational axis relative to the plane of our path around the Sun. In the winter, those of us in the Northern hemisphere are tilted away from the Sun. Second, the orbit of the Earth around the Sun isn't a perfect circle.

Sunday, November 6, 2022, 1:00:00 am local standard time instead. Sunrise and sunset were about 1 hour earlier on Nov 6, 2022 than the day before. There was more light in the morning. Also called Fall Back and Winter Time.
Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday when we set clocks back an hour. Sunrise and sunset shift an hour earlier. Dusk arrives early these days — and it's about to arrive even earlier when daylight saving time ends this Sunday.

We believe in the free flow of information
Over the past few decades, Earth's rotation around its axis – which determines how long a day is – has been speeding up. This trend has been making our days shorter; in fact, in June 2022 we set a record for the shortest day over the past half a century or so.
The solstice, which usually falls on Dec. 21 or 22, is technically not a full calendar day but an exact moment in time. It occurs when Earth's Northern Hemisphere is tilted farthest from the sun, bringing us our shortest daylight period and the lowest sun angle of the year.
September and October lose about two to three minutes of daylight each day throughout the entirety of both months. Late June is when day length is maximized.
In October we lose about one to three minutes per day due to earth's tilt away from the sun, said meteorologist Katrina Hand from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The polar night is a phenomenon where the nighttime lasts for more than 24 hours that occurs in the northernmost and southernmost regions of Earth. This occurs only inside the polar circles.
What states are getting rid of daylight Savings time?
US States Ready to Remove DST
2021: Alabama, Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, and Montana. 2020: Idaho, Louisiana, Ohio, South Carolina, Utah, and Wyoming. 2019: Delaware, Maine, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington. 2018: Florida and California.
The winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year and the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere, when the sun appears at its most southerly position, directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn.
After today, according to NASA, the days will gradually get longer and the nights shorter until the summer solstice, which in 2023 falls on Wednesday, June 21, at 9:57 a.m. CDT. Before that will be the beginning of astronomical spring on Monday, March 20, 2023.
December is the darkest month of the year.
The winter solstice occurs on Wednesday (Dec. 21) at 4:48 p.m. EST (2148 GMT), according to Farmer's Almanac (opens in new tab).
Located more than 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Tromsø, Norway, is home to extreme light variation between seasons. During the Polar Night, which lasts from November to January, the sun doesn't rise at all.
According to the World Meteorological Organization, Yuma (Arizona) is the sunniest place on earth. It has a total of 11 hours of sunlight in winter and up to 13 in summer.
Reykjavik, Iceland
In Icelandic folklore, the shortest night of the year is an enchanted time when cows talk, seals turn into humans, and elves and trolls venture down from the mountains.
21st June is the longest day and it marks the shortest night in the northern hemisphere.
The Longest Day (Summer Solstice) is observed on either June 20, 21, or 22, but this year, it falls on June 21. The timing shifts because it depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point from the celestial equator. It signals the start of astronomical summer.
Which state does not get dark?
Alaska: The sun doesn't set in the country of Alaska from late May to late July.
You will also observe that Florida's longitude position is 7.5 degrees west of states like New York. Typically, the earth takes approximately 30 minutes to rotate 7.5 degrees, meaning the sun will reach its midday position 30 minutes later in Florida than it does in other states within the region.

In short, the sun is getting farther away from Earth over time. On average, Earth is about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) from the sun, according to NASA (opens in new tab). However, its orbit is not perfectly circular; it's slightly elliptical, or oval-shaped.
As you may know the international date line is as crooked as the contents of a badly packed suitcase, and Samoa, once known as the last place to see the sun set, is now the first place on the planet you can see the sun rise. This makes it's neighbour American Samoa the last.
Daylight saving time ended at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 6, and begins again at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2023. Now that clocks have "fallen back," it'll be lighter earlier in the morning and darker earlier in the evening.
So to put it simply, we change the clocks to make better use of natural daylight in the morning. During the summer time, we borrow an hour of daylight from the morning and shift it to the evening to reduce our energy consumption.
Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 2:00 A.M. On Saturday night, clocks are set forward one hour (i.e., losing one hour) to “spring forward.” Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 2:00 A.M. On Saturday night, clocks are set back one hour (i.e., gaining one hour) to “fall back.”
Changing crime rates
Research has found that by extending evening daylight hours, as we do in the spring, crime rates actually go down, with robberies being reduced by 7% from the day before, and overall crime going down by 27% in the additional evening hour of sunlight gained on that day.
So far in 2022, Colorado, Kentucky and Mississippi have approved legislation. Colorado named DST the year-round standard time, subject to federal approval.
What would getting rid of Daylight Savings Time do?
If daylight saving time were abolished nationwide, it would eliminate the inconsistencies in timing tied to the fact that not all states implement DST. Productivity may increase for a bit, at least offsetting the impact of workers who forget about the time change.

One impact of being in complete darkness is that it can wreck your sleep cycle. Two of the key mechanisms for sleep cycle regulation, the hormone melatonin and the brain's suprachiasmatic nucleus, both rely on light to function. Daylight reduces our levels of melatonin, helping us feel awake.

Bottom line: The solstice comes on December 21, 2022, at 21:48 UTC. But the earliest sunsets at mid-northern latitudes – say, 40 degrees north latitude – happen on and around December 6 or 7. By comparison, latitudes closer to the equator had their earliest sunsets in late November, or earlier in December.
