Like so many of our native plants, Veronicastrum virginicum has medicinal uses—the plant purportedly gets its common name, Culver's root, from a Doctor Culver, who prescribed the plant as a cathartic.

Native to eastern North America, Culver's Root flourishes in full sun or light shade and tolerates a wide range of soils. Butterflies and numerous solitary bees such as sweat bees, carpenter bees and bumble bees will visit the popular flowers.
Use. Black culver's root has been used as a liver tonic, for liver or gallbladder disorders, and to promote bile flow. It has also been used for various GI problems; however, no studies are available to confirm these uses.

What root beer has the most caffeine?

Culver's Root is one of approximately 20 species of Veronicastrum found throughout North America, Europe and Asia. A member of the Plantain Family or Plantaginaeae, this species is native to open forests, meadows, grassy mountain slopes and prairies from Ontario south to Georgia and Louisiana.
Culver's root grows best in full sun and medium to wet, well-drained, humus-rich soil. It tolerates light shade, but too much shade may cause the plant to develop a weak central stem and fall over midseason.
In the wild, Culver's root usually grows in moist sites such as along riverbeds, in moist meadows or in sunny, damp woodlands. That means that Culver's root care is easiest when the perennial is planted in moist soil in a sunny spot.

Growing Veronicastrum virginicum
virginicum is an erect growing perennial with unbranched stems and lance-shaped, pointed dark green leaves. The leaves appear in whorls up the stem. The flower spikes appear from midsummer on into early autumn and the overall height of this plant in flower can be as much as 6ft.
Cut the plant down to ground level in autumn when flowering has finished.

Why does the ice cream freeze in root beer?
The soda on the outside is warmer than the ice cream when poured over it. This melts some ice cream and dilutes the soda with sweet creamy goodness. Sometimes the ice cream will be cold enough to freeze parts of the soda onto the ice cream causing this "crispy" shell that I like.
When the carbonated root beer comes into contact with the ice cream, carbon dioxide bubbles release. Likewise, the soda frees air bubbles trapped in the ice cream. What's more, the fat in the ice cream coats these bubbles. Thus, protecting them and allowing them to expand.
Root beer belongs to a secondary classification of beer, not one brewed with traditional cereal grains like wheat and barley, but with actual plant roots. A&W, Dr. Pepper, Barq's and others have done a great job popularizing root beer in the modern era, but many of the best are still made at craft breweries.

In 1875, Charles Elmer Hires introduced the first commercial brand of root beer, named Hires Root Beer. Hires initially wanted to name the product to be “Root Tea,” but chose “Root Beer,” to make the beverage attractive to Pennsylvanian coal miners.
