What was Betsy's injury in Dopesick?
After a mining accident leaves Betsy with a badly injured back, she calls her doctor, Samuel Finnix (a fictional amalgam), played by Keaton. Finnix, like so many real-life doctors from that time, has been misled into thinking he can prescribe OxyContin without risk of addiction.
And so it is, as she tragically dies after overdosing on the injected heroin. It's a devastating, unshakable conclusion to Betsy's arc, meticulously executed by Dever, who deserves all the love from Emmy voters for putting a face on opioid addiction with great care and precision.

Dopesick Is More Accurate & Factual To The Real Opioid Crisis Than Painkiller.
In 2010, Purdue discontinued the original formulation of OxyContin and released one that reduced abuse of the drug, potentially slowing the growth in opioid addiction. When crushed, the new formulation would not turn into a powder, so it could not as easily be snorted or injected. This did not avoid all harms, however.
