Were humans meant to eat meat raw?
A new study suggests that neither we nor our ancestors were capable of eating raw meat without some form of processing. Paleoanthropologist Daniel Lieberman chewed raw goat meat for the sake of science, so he knows from experience that it's a challenge.

Every living animal, including you, is host to a microscopic ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Most of these microorganisms are killed when meat is cooked. But when left uncooked, meat becomes fertile ground for these and other germs within hours of death.
Early humans didn't have sharp fangs like predators do, so they couldn't physically bite into carcasses. It really was the invention of technology and stone tools [that made meat-eating possible] — like using rounded rocks to bash open bones to get at the marrow inside and sharp-edged rocks to slice meat off bones.

The diet of the earliest hominins was probably somewhat similar to the diet of modern chimpanzees: omnivorous, including large quantities of fruit, leaves, flowers, bark, insects and meat (e.g., Andrews & Martin 1991; Milton 1999; Watts 2008).
The only food allowed to Adam and Eve (and indeed all the animals) in the Garden of Eden was plants. Meat-eating was not allowed by God until the time of Noah, when it was clearly a concession to human weakness. In the laws of the Bible, the suffering of animals must be avoided.
Pounding and heating food “predigests” it, so our guts spend less energy breaking it down, absorb more than if the food were raw, and thus extract more fuel for our brains. “Cooking produces soft, energy-rich foods,” says Wrangham. Today we can't survive on raw, unprocessed food alone, he says.
Although many humans choose to eat both plants and meat, earning us the dubious title of “omnivore,” we're anatomically herbivorous. The good news is that if you want to eat like our ancestors, you still can: Nuts, vegetables, fruit, and legumes are the basis of a healthy vegan lifestyle.
All known human societies eat cooked foods, and biologists generally agree cooking could have had major effects on how the human body evolved. For example, cooked foods tend to be softer than raw ones, so humans can eat them with smaller teeth and weaker jaws.
Humans are omnivores: we can digest raw meat and thrive. The Inuit, among others living in frozen latitudes, eat raw meat from seals, caribou, elk or whale. Uncooked cuts from horses, chickens and goats are presented as small delicacies on tables from Europe to Japan.
How do people eat raw meat without getting sick?
The best advice is to follow the traditional way of preparing and consuming raw meat: make sure raw meat is very fresh. only buy raw meat from a reputable butcher who understands this is how the meat will be consumed. prepare and consume as soon as possible after slaughter.

The Risks of Eating Uncooked Meat
“Not only is there a risk of being infected with campylobacters and salmonellas, but also parasites such as roundworms and tapeworms,” says Beth Czerwony, RD, a registered dietitian with Cleveland Clinic's Center for Nutrition.
According to some users on the r/rawmeat subreddit, eating uncooked meat supposedly gives them more energy and better digestion. But many food safety experts say that consuming raw meat poses a serious health risk.
Do we need to eat meat to survive?
Contrary to what was once popular belief, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that humans can obtain all of the essential nutrients required to sustain life and health by adhering to a well-balanced, appropriately planned vegetarian or vegan diet.
We were never meant to eat meat or dairy (which humans only began consuming 6,000 years ago), our bodies are not designed to eat flesh and our health is suffering because of it. Once we exclude animal products from our diets our own health, our planet's health and the lives of billions of animals will be better for it.
Broadly speaking, evolution simply means the gradual change in the genetics of a population over time. From that standpoint, human beings are constantly evolving and will continue to do so long as we continue to successfully reproduce. What has changed, however, are the conditions through which that change occurs.
This suggests some surprising things about our future. We will likely live longer and become taller, as well as more lightly built. We'll probably be less aggressive and more agreeable, but have smaller brains. A bit like a golden retriever, we'll be friendly and jolly, but maybe not that interesting.
