Complex love triangles and character shipping are nothing new in the anime world, and the love life of Asta is no exception. Plenty of fans still wonder who Asta will marry in Black Clover – specifically, whether it could be Noelle or Sister Lily.
Asta had a strong infatuation with Sister Lily, all while building a strong relationship with Noelle in Black Clover. But, Asta and Noelle have shown some signs of having romantic feelings for each other, and he finally accepts Sister Lily’s rejection with a smile. It’s likely they would end up together.
While these Black Clover characters have not formed romantic relationships, there are a few hints that could point to the most probable suitor. Does Asta Marry Sister Lily In Black Clover?
Sister Lily is quite an important character throughout the entire Black Clover storyline, being one of the key characters who helped raise Asta as a child – not to mention a major aspect of Black Clover chapter 335 as well. Sister Lily, formally known as Lily Aquaria, used to read stories about the first Magic Emporer at the church in Hage to Asta when he was young, making her a massive influence on his dream of becoming the Magic Emporer himself.
Lily has been Asta’s main love interest from the very beginning. While Asta is certainly set on becoming the Magic Emporer, also since he would be able to help everyone at the church live better lives, some speculate that he has this dream with the additional intention of winning Lily’s love as well.
Asta has a strong infatuation with Sister Lily, and he has repeatedly proposed to her over the years – despite her being a member of the church. He writes to her to update Lily on events whenever he can, and he also regularly sends over portions of his wages to Sister Lily (and the church) to help out but also in the hopes of winning her affection.
Sister Lily Sees Asta as a “Cute Little Brother”
However, Sister Lily has sternly rejected Asta on these proposals each and every time – understandably so, considering her influence in his upbringing. In fact, Lily even goes as far as to use her magic simply to say no, as seen in the image below:
One year and three months after the spade kingdom war, Asta proposed for the last time, promising to make her happy. She rejects it, stating that she sees him as family, referring to him as “My Dashing, Cute Little Brother”. Asta finally seemed to accept her rejection with a smile. At this point, it appears the young hero has eventually learned that he can’t always change the feelings of others – no matter how hard he tries, or how much he gives.
Asta still cares about Sister Lily and he responds by asking her to watch him become the Wizard King. Sister Lily responds with a smile, believing he can do it. The relationship takes a turn for the better, and it seems he’s ready to move on. It’s not unlike iconic anime protagonists and heroes to start off with an unrealistic concept of love, and infatuation, and start letting go once they start growing up.
Does Asta Marry Noelle In Black Clover?
Noelle is possibly one of the most well-loved Black Clover characters aside from Asta – and, it’s really no surprise most Black Clover fans would like Asta to end up with her. Noelle has been Asta’s squadmate for ages, as they initially met when Magna gave a Black Bull’s hideout tour to Asta.
When she first met him, Noelle was quite rude and patronizing towards Asta without giving him much real attention, although most of it was as a result of her royal status. They did have a bit of a personality clash, and Noelle wasn’t too fond of Asta’s loud and bold attitude. But, they become close really quickly and soon develop a strong bond – which, could likely lead to something more.
Does Noelle Like Asta?
Things changed once he started complimenting her magic abilities, considering that this topic made her a point of ridicule and torment from her family. She soon softened and warmed up to him, after which they became really close teammates and friends. According to the Black Clover Wiki:
“Noelle quickly found herself on friendly terms with Asta which soon after turned into strong romantic feelings. The two spend most of their time together around the hideout and on missions.”
Noelle clearly likes Asta already. Plus, since they’ve spent so much time together, it’s really no surprise they would have become closer than ‘usual’ – to the point where Noelle thinks of him while trying to control her magic, as seen below thanks to fans on Quora.
The main issue is that Noelle has always found it hard to accept her own feelings – let alone really tell Asta. Noelle’s inability to accept her feelings for him has also caused her to attack Asta at times she becomes too flustered with him. Noelle and Asta grew up really differently – extending to conditions, locations, mindsets, and much more.
Does Asta Like Noelle?
Since Asta is already going through a special, ‘protagonistic’ character arc of his own, we have to consider the different mindset he would have been in the entire time he was with Noelle. It’s not uncommon for anime heroes to have development journeys that are not considered the norm.
Asta is very fond of Noelle as a friend but is mostly unaware of the romantic feelings she has for him, while he misinterprets her feelings as a deep trust that is too embarrassing and hard for her to admit. But, Asta has always shown love towards Noelle in just about every situation – always supporting her, helping her whenever she needs him and complimenting her all the time.
“While she can be rude and critical towards him, he remains oblivious and ultimately very kind towards her. At the Star Awards Festival, he admitted that he likes Noelle a lot after he sees her help a lost child, which caused Noelle to blush.”
He is really protective over her as well, saving her on numerous occasions, and he gets really angry when anyone embarrasses or ridicules her. On paper, Asta clearly ticks all of the boxes even though he may not say it in words.
Were Asta & Noelle Childhood Friends?
In addition to all of this, Tatsuya Yoshihara, the director of the Black Clover anime, shared an interesting piece of artwork that portrays child versions of Asta and Noelle, as seen below thanks to a post on Twitter:
The artwork itself has a really cute feel, and it may indicate a ton of things depending on how you view it – but ‘Asta and Noelle’ shippers are pretty excited about it. If this artwork is canon, Asta and Noelle may have a deeper relationship than it initially appeared, even if they weren’t the best childhood friends.
If this were the case, the odds of Asta and Noelle being the ‘happily ever after’ scene might be substantially higher. Putting aside the existing romantic tension between them, it’s not unlike anime writers to leave the lead hero’s ‘true love’ right under the readers’ noses.
Considering that Asta and Noelle are more suited to each other, and may have been pretty close for much longer than many knew about, it’s far more likely for Asta to eventually end up with Noelle. In all likelihood, Sister Lily may be perfectly happy for both of them if this were to play out.
