Are there any white castles in California? ›

According to the company, the first location opened more than 100 years ago in 1921. The chain was the topic of the 2004 film “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.” There are no White Castle locations in California, with the closest being White Castle Las Vegas.

White Castle (1921)

America's first ever fast food burger chain would of course make an appearance on this list. White Castle first started in 1921 when Walter Anderson and Billy Ingram wanted to provide hungry customers with affordable and easy-to-serve burgers.

White Castle has the distinction of being one of the original fast-food chains, with its first location cropping up in Wichita, Kansas, in 1921. Founders Walt Anderson and Bill Ingram started the chain together, and had to battle against consumer hesitance over beef burgers as their main product.

Today, the 102-year-old brand is still family owned and operated. Aside from its 350 units, White Castle also operates a retail line of sliders in grocery stores. The brand is a C-corporation in how it's organized, but its still owned by descendants of the Ingram family.
