The taste of Dr Pepper is really hard to describe, simply because there's nothing quite like it.

Some say it has a hint of cherry or a trace of liquorice, but the reason it’s so hard to describe what Dr Pepper tastes like, is probably down to the fact that there’s a combination of 23 different flavours!

Obviously, the original Dr Pepper recipe of 23 flavours is closely guarded secret, and although often imitated, it’s also why it’s never been duplicated.

Dr Pepper was created in the 1885 by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas and there’s been a lot of speculation around the flavours of Dr Pepper over the last 140 years or so.

This deliciously unique beverage was marketed nationally in America in 1904 as a new kind of soda pop, delivering a satisfying refreshment and so called ‘health benefits’.

Here’s some of guesses as to what 23 flavours go in to make Dr Pepper (in no particular order):-

Amaretto, almond, blackberry, black liquorice, carrot, clove, cherry, cola, ginger, juniper, lemon, molasses, nutmeg, orange, prune, plum, pepper, root beer, rum, raspberry, tomato, vanilla, apricot, caramel, anise, sarsaparilla, cardamon, all spice, coriander juniper, birch and prickly ash.

So, when it comes to answering, what does Dr Pepper taste like, it’s a bit like saying orange tastes like orange. Dr pepper tastes like Dr Pepper.

Dr Pepper fun facts

• Back in the day, Dr Pepper was sold as a brain tonic and pick-me-up and was available at American drugstores to cure whatever was ailing you.
• Early adverts for Dr Pepper made medical claims, stating that it aids digestion and restores vigour and vitality!
• Apparently the actual 23 flavours in the recipe for Dr Pepper is kept as two halves in safe deposit boxes in two separate Dallas banks.
• Dr Pepper sued Coca-Cola for trademark infringement for a soft drink called "Peppo". Coca-Cola renamed their beverage Dr. Pibb, which also didn’t go down well with Dr Pepper, so Coca-Cola renamed it Mr Pibb.
• Dr Pepper appeared in the 1994 Forrest Gump movie, being Forrest’s favourite drink. When Forrest visited the White House on one occasion, he said "The best part about goin' to the White House was, they had all the food and drink that you wanted ... I must have had me 15 Dr Peppers."
• There’s a Dr Pepper Museum in downtown Waco, Texas, in a building where Dr Pepper was bottled in 1906. It has a working old-fashioned soda fountain, and of course a Dr Pepper gift shop.
