Food and Cooking

Examiner: What sorts of food do you like eating most? [Why?]

Candidate:I mostly like to eat traditional food and anything that is healthy. From this regard, I prefer homemade food over fast food items. Some of my favourite food items are dates, fruits, fish, Kabsa, Maqluba, Shuwaa, vegetables and Khabees.

Homemade food, our traditional food, fish, vegetables and fruits that I prefer are far better than the street food and fast food in terms of their food value and nutritional aspects. I believe eating habit takes time to grow and for a long, I have tried to follow a good diet.

Examiner:Who normally does the cooking in your home?

Candidate:Well, my mother is in charge to prepare food and look after the menu. We have a housemaid who helps my mother in that. Sometimes my elder sister assists my mom in cooking but this is a very rare occasion as she is quite busy with her studies.

Examiner:Do you watch cookery programmes on TV? [Why/Why not?]

Candidate:Cooking is not my passion and I rarely try to cook in real-life. However, watching cookery programmes on TV is very interesting, at least to me. I often watch cookery TV shows like Baking With Julia, Daisy Cooks!, MasterChef, and World Class Cuisine and like the way they present new menus and their excellent way of cooking. They have taken cooking into the next level and it seems like cooking is an art whenever I watch such a programme.

Examiner:In general, do you prefer eating out or eating at home? [Why?]

Candidate:I usually avoid eating outside and prefer to eat homemade food. Homemade food items have better taste, superior food values and I enjoy my dinner with my family members more than eating in a restaurant or a bistro. Furthermore, restaurant foods are quite expensive in my country.

Sample Answer 1:(House in Sheffield, England)

Well, at first, I was a bit flummoxed by this topic. I suppose that’s because it is easy to take for granted the sorts of accommodation people live in, and not really pause to think about it all that much. I have moved around a lot for work and so try not to get too attached to houses or flats I’ve rented as I am never sure how long I might be in them. The location of the accommodation is usually the most important thing for me when I’m choosing where I live, and so I don’t really tend to judge other people’s living situations as they too can be precarious. However, now you have given me the topic to talk about, I can think of one example of where a friend lives that immediately comes to mind. I’m going to tell you all about her house, where it is, what it’s like (as best I can) and the pros and cons of her choice of home.

So, this friend of mine is someone who I’ve known for years. She is married, and shares her home with her husband and two almost grown up children. They are quite a sporty household, interested in lots of activities like walking, cycling, running and music. Both her sons play in student bands. My friend also runs her own business (mail-order cookies) from the basem*nt of her home, so it’s quite a busy household!

The house is in Nether Edge, which is an established residential suburb in the south-west of the City of Sheffield, England. This is in colloquial terms quite a ‘posh’ area of Sheffield! It is a relatively affluent area with wide tree-lined streets and lots of little boutique shops, delicatessens and even its own well-established amateur theatre in the area. It has a real community feel, everyone there seems to know their neighbours and take an interest in what is going on on their doorstep. The houses tend to be Victorian, built of solid stone. The grandest houses have their own walled gardens and are packed with ‘original features’ like large windows, beautiful old fire-places, picture rails and wooden floorboards. Some of the houses have now been sub-divided into flats, and there are a few newer properties tucked away within the region. Generally, though, it’s a very pretty area of the city, with a mix of attractive terraced houses and some larger detached properties. It is certainly a very ‘desirable’ place to live, particularly for people with families, as it is safe, with a community feel and properties large enough to accommodate the biggest of families.

The house my friend lives in is a beautiful rambling Victorian home. It has many original fireplaces with black hearthstones and attractive tiles along the sides of the open fire grates. There are wooden floors a-plenty, high ceilings and the house goes up three floors high as well as down into the basem*nt. She has converted this area into a lovely kitchen for her business on one side of the basem*nt, the other side has racks of bikes carefully stored away in the dry. In the walled garden, she can keep a few chickens – which is a relatively rare privilege in what is almost a city location. Because the house is usually a hive of activity, the kitchen is always a warm and friendly place where you can sit at the large kitchen table and catch up on gossip over a cup of coffee. From the hallway, there is a large reception room where in winter you can snuggle up in front of a roaring open fire on one of the two squidgy sofas placed in their for guests. The house has great character, a little bit of faded grandeur perhaps, but it is really impressive.

What do I like about the property! Well, it’s gorgeous, I love the quirkiness of the Victorian property, the luxury of a real fire and the original features are stunning. It is a busy household where there is always something going on and a warm welcome too, it isn’t just the architecture of the building and the possessions within it that make it an attractive property, it is the family within it! In my dreams, I’d love to live in a property like this, however, the reality could be a bit different. The tall ceilings and large rooms are indeed gorgeous, but they aren’t very practical in an English winter. The property is hard to heat and the electricity bills must be huge. All those open-fires and so many stairs and rooms make it hard to keep clean. Old houses don’t tend to have much in the way of storage, so there is a constant battle to find ‘homes’ for the clutter of living. Still, I reckon that would be a small price to pay for such a lovely home, one day perhaps... In the meantime, I feel very lucky that my friend is so willing to welcome me and others to come and visit her there and enjoy it too. I’ve had some very happy times in that lovely home, but you know what, if she had to move I’m sure as she is so hospitable, I’d find I quickly became just as attached to her new home even if it was a complete contrast and a small, modern flat in a high rise block. It is people that make a home, not the bricks used to construct the walls that surround them!

Model Answer 2:

My younger sister, who is married to a doctor, lives in a large apartment and this is quite an elegant apartment in my opinion. For this cue card topic, I would like to talk about this apartment which is located in the northern part of the(…say the city name here…).

My sister’s name is Emmy and his husband is a renowned doctor. They bought this apartment 2 years ago and live there with their only son Christopher. The apartment is on the 3rd floor of a six-storied building which is located in the 2nd lane of the (… say the area name here…). It is only 20 minutes walking distance from my house. On an average, I visit my nephew and sister twice in a month.

The whole apartment is more than 2600 square feet and has 4 bedrooms, one dining room. The verandahs are quite large and my sister had put several flower pots there which have enhanced the beauty of the whole apartment. The apartment is comparatively spacious and the while coloured indoor looks new to me. The rooms all have attached bathrooms with them and most of the furniture were bought from the most renowned and branded shops. My sister had an interior designing diploma and she has put every effort to make her own house look beautiful. From a neutral point of view, I would say she is a talented interior designer as she has been quite successful to make the interior of her own house impressive. The large wooden furniture, the modern and sophisticated design of most of the furniture and handpicked wall-frames gives a rich impression to a guest who visits this apartment.

I like this apartment because it has got a large space, unlike many other apartments I have visited. The rooms give complete privacy to the house members as they are not adjacent to each other. The interior of the apartment is quite attractive. Moreover, my sister, as an interior designer has designed it perfectly. The apartment gives me the impression of beauty and comfort. For these reasons, I love this apartment.

Examiner:What kinds of home are most popular in your country? Why is this?

Candidate:In urban areas, high-rising buildings are the most common accommodation type for people in my country. Even though many of them like an independent two-storied bungalow, this is not affordable for all. Only rich people have such houses.

The villages have mud houses, and tent houses which look quite different and have a great traditional value in my country. With the modernisation and increasing population, the traditional houses are being replaced by high-rising modern buildings.

Examiner:What do you think are the advantages of living in a house rather than an apartment?

Candidate:Houses are usually capacious, have spaces in front of it and offer better views than the apartments. A house owner can design the house the way he/she likes, expand it and can change the architect on his/her wish. Moreover, a homeowner enjoys great freedom and have access to fresh air and enough sunlight that the apartment dwellers often miss.

Examiner:Do you think that everyone would like to live in a larger home? Why is that?

Candidate:I believe so. If people have had a choice, almost everyone would love to live in a large house rather than an apartment.

An apartment is a minimum arrangement for a family to have some rooms to live in. It does not offer open space, facilities to have gardens, flower plants and yard. The homeowners, on the contrary, can enjoy these facilities and have greater freedom which is unimaginable in an apartment.

Finding a place to live:

Examiner:How easy is it to find a place to live in your country?

Candidate:Well, it is moderately easier in a small town but quite difficult in a large city. Big cities are already struggling to accommodate a large number of population and proper housing is a problem for many. If someone does not have a large sum of money to spend on his accommodation per month, he will surely find it hard to arrange a nice place to live in.

Examiner:Do you think it’s better to rent or to buy a place to live in? Why?

Candidate:I think owning a house is far better than renting one. However, this varies from person to person and if the person wants to permanently settle in a place, he/she should think about purchasing a place rather than renting one. However, for a brief staying, renting is a better option in my opinion.

Examiner:Do you agree that there is a right age for young adults to stop living with their parents? Why is that?

Candidate:I do not think that someone should ever leave his/her parents permanently, at least I would never do that. However, it is quite logical that someone needs to leave his/her house for better education and job opportunities but this does not mean that someone has to decide it at a certain age.

But, if someone decides that he has lived with his parents for a long period of time and now the time has come for him to start living with his fiance or friends, that would be a different case. In my country, a boy or a girl leaves the house for higher studies and reunite with the family after she/he has a job.

Candidate:It is a tradition in our country that newly-become-parents discuss with relatives and friends about the name of the newborn. Many relatives suggest names and parents even search online for great names. As I heard from my father, he and my mom did the same. However, instead of searching online, as the internet was yet to be available back then, they bought a book that listed several hundred names for newborns. Finally, they took my grandmother's suggestion and named me Vida.

Examiner:Does your name have any special meaning?

Candidate:Yes, the name has a nice meaning, at least to me and my parents! The word 'Vida', which is my first name, means 'dearly loved'.

Examiner:Is your name common or unusual in your country?

Candidate:I don't think it is that rare as I have encountered several other girls in my life who share the same name. However, I would not say that the name 'Vida' is very common as well.

Examiner:If you could change your name, would you? [Why/Why not?]

Candidate:Definitely not. I love my name and the very sound of this name gives a special feeling in my heart and mind. I am "Vida" to my parents, relatives, friends and I want to be it to the rest of the world for the rest of my life.

Sample Answer 1:

A plate of yummy food can remove the tiredness of the day. In fact, we eat, we live and this is true for all living being. But recently I had seen a documentary about food and their processing that shocked me heavily and it was one of the most interesting TV documentaries I have ever seen.

People take food for several reasons, and the most prominent of them is their craving for the food or they want a comfort for their hunger. But my idea of taking food for comfort has been changed after watching the Food Inc., a documentary on the food habits, food processing and how the large corporations cheating on innocent people. Actually, the documentary unfolded some blind parts of the food industry across the world. Food habits and tastes have been changed with the course of time and to meet the growing needs, the food producing corporations are following numerous irrational ways and having their profits.

Generally, before watching any movie or documentary, I like to do some homework on them such as I analyse rating, read reviews etc. to know if they are worth watching. Accordingly, I found that Food, Inc., a documentary by Robert Kenner, has been nominated for some prestigious awards in the USA. Moreover, the teaser of the documentary also attracted me. So, I started watching this documentary and came to know about a large number of confidential issues regarding food business. In fact, staying healthy is not enough today, we should be also careful about our food selection. The food items that we take from the superstores and chain shops are entirely unhealthy for us. At the same time, the food producers are damaging the environment. Such issues were highly confidential until Mr Kenner unveiled them on screen through his documentary. Watching the documentary film was a nice experience for me.

Food, Inc. taught me a wide number of things and I try to follow them in my own lifestyle. Basically, the documentary is an analysis of the existing food markets - how these food items are grown, how the corporations are abusing the environment, food, animals and people engaged in the food processing, how they are cheating the consumers and more other intriguing issues. The advertisem*nts of different food products show that the foods items are handpicked directly from the farms. But in reality, they are not, the foods are ‘manufactured’ in factories. Has anyone ever thought how the seasonal vegetables are available all around the year or how they are found in plenty during off-season? No, we do not think about such issues. We are not allowed to! The food industry owners do not want us to know these secrets lest they fail in the business. Moreover, the filmmaker had to remain careful about legal issues against him, the production company and channel that would broadcast it while making this documentary.

Food, Inc. has taught me some good and valuable lessons. I think it is good to be healthy but at the same time, we should be careful about foods we eat. There are three segments of the documentary and each of the parts revealed some highly sought information for the audiences that the food producers never wanted to expose in public. The entire productions process, especially in the case of meat, it is inhumane and disastrous to the environment. Besides, the large-scale productions of grains, green vegetables and fruits are also not sustainable. The majority of the vegetables and fruits are preserved with toxic chemicals harmful to human health. The advertisem*nts create an appealing impression of the food and grains are gathered from a large ranch filled with green plants. But the inner scenario is completely different and there are no links at all to the large farms or greeneries. I loved the documentary for its bold expression of unethical activities from the food industry owners.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to let me talk about an interesting TV documentary that I have watched. I had to decide among 4-5 best and the most intriguing TV documentaries I have ever watched. 'The War Game' - a 1965 TV documentary that I watched in 2012 is the TV documentary I would like to talk about.

'The War Game' was directed and written by Peter Watkins and was distributed in the UK by the British Broadcasting Corporation. It was a television drama, a masterpiece that depicted the nuclear war. This documentary portrayed the horrified and catastrophic effects of war and was quite interesting to watch. It was awarded the Academy Award for the Best Documentary in 1966.

This was approximately a 50-minute black-and-white documentary that I watched all of a sudden. It was the evening time and it was raining outside. I sat on a sofa and was surfing different satellite TV channels. All of a sudden I tuned to BBC and within a few minutes, this documentary started. It would be 2012, I guess. The documentary was so absorbing, shocking, horrifying and yet interesting that I was glued to the sofa.

'The War Game' depicts the prelude to as well as the immediate weeks of the aftermath of a Soviet nuclear attack against Britain. The documentary ends on a gloomy Christmas day after the nuclear war. The story was told like a news magazine programme style which made it even more interesting.

While watching this documentary I realised the brutality of wars, unimaginable destructions nuclear weapons can cause, how people become the victims of war, how a single wrong decision can cost the lives of millions, how cities and civilisations can be wiped out in few minutes and finally that wars are political decisions that should never happen in the first place.

The topic, filming, narrating, theme, casting, camera work, the depiction of wars, true events are all very fascinating in this documentary. As soon as I finished watching it, I realised this was a worth watching TV documentary and I would recommend it to my close friends. In fact, it was so interesting that I watched it once again in 2013.

Discussion topics:Different types of TV programmes

Examiner:What are the most popular kinds of TV programmes in your country? Why is this?

Candidate:I guess the news, talk shows and TV series are the most popular TV programmes in our country. People love to get updates and most of the TV channels have some sort of news programmes. This is why people want to watch the news daily. Talks shows give an insight into a pressing issue and bring many popular personalities to the programme and people love to watch what they have got to say on an issue. TV series is highly entertaining and have many genres and viewers can always pick their favourite series based on their preferences. Personally, I like TV series and news programmes. Apart from that, some music and sports channels have gained huge popularity in recent days and I am a fan of these channels as well.

Examiner:Do you think there are too many game shows on TV nowadays? Why?

Candidate:I think the number of sports and game shows is on the rise and it is interesting to notice that a good number of sports channels has gained tremendous followers these days. Game shows are entertaining and exciting and people love to watch their favourite sports team win a competition. Following the national team compete in the international stage is a passion for many and the TV channels want to reach those audiences. Apart from that, quiz shows, game shows and other shows related to sports are also gaining popularity.

Examiner:Do you think TV is the main way for people to get the news in your country? What other ways are there?

Candidate:I think TV is still the main source for people in my country to get news and updates on current events. With the increasing popularity of the Internet and social networking platform, many young people opt to the Internet for getting news. However, TV is still the main source for news for the whole nation

Among other common sources for news, people rely on radio, newspaper and magazines. Obviously, a great proportion of people these days depend on the Internet for the latest news.

Examiner:What types of products are advertised most often on TV?

Candidate:I would rather say what type of products and services are not on the TV? Starting from cosmetics, household appliances and cars manufacturers, online stores, fast food chains shops, real estate businesses and so on all want their presence on TV and to attract more people to their products and services. I personally believe beauty products and electronic products have the highest number of TV advertisem*nts in our country and whenever I turn on a channel, their adverts are there.

Examiner:Do you think that people pay attention to adverts on TV? Why do you think that is?

Candidate:I think people pay attention to TV ads even after they are bombarded with those adverts constantly. Sometimes people pay attention to those adverts willingly and sometimes unconsciously. I believe that whenever someone has to pick a product from a store, which offers a large number of brands and manufacturers, people opt for the one they have noticed on TV. Besides, whenever someone is in front of a TV set, his eyes and ears concentrate on the things shown on the screen, and even though many of us are irritated with the number of adverts shown on TV, we have no alternatives if we want to watch our favourite programmes on TV.

Examiner:How important are regulations on TV advertising?

Candidate:I think every advert should go through a rigid screening before they are live on TV. The authority should make sure that the advertisem*nt is suitable for the whole family, do not broadcast fake products or services and does comply with the advertisem*nt policies.

Candidate:I go out with my friends almost two or three times a week. During my university years, it was more frequent but these days, I cannot hang out with friends or see them that much as I have got busy with my job and other responsibilities.

Examiner:Tell me about your best friend at school.

Candidate:Well, my best friend in my school days was John and in fact, he is still my best buddy. He is a compassionate, talented and honest individual. We had our ups and downs in our school days but he had always been there for me. He is now an architect and works for a large company in our city. He is married to Maria, a girl from our college, and they are happily married. I value our friendship and so does he.

Examiner:How friendly are you with your neighbours? [Why/Why not?]

Candidate:Except for a particular rude neighbour, I have a good relationship with almost all our next-door-neighbours. We live in our area as if we are close relatives. There were times they extended their helping hands to me when I most needed them. On every major occasion, they invite my family and so do we. Despite our cultural, religious and other differences, we are all good friends and I am lucky to be in such a great neighbourhood.

Examiner:Which is more important to you, friends or family? [Why?]

Candidate:This is a tough question to answer! I value my family over my friends. However, this does not mean that my friends do not have a special place in my heart. Family comes first and they are the individuals I feel most connected with. Everyone has a responsibility to look after his/her family and support them unconditionally. This is true for friends as well but the responsibility and bond between family members are acuter, I believe. Some of our friends are quite important while some are not. This is not the case for the family members as all of them are supremely important to me.

Joanna Rowling, who is more popularly known as J.K. Rowling is the writer I would love to meet and spend some time with. She is a British Novelist and the creator of the world-famous Harry Potter Series.

She was born on 31st July 1965 in Yale, England. Besides writing, she is also a screenwriter, film producer and researcher. She was employed as a researcher for Amnesty International when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter while on a delay for the train in 1990. Her fantasy series books Harry Potter gained worldwide attention and sold over four hundred million copies. She also worked as a producer of the movie series Hary Potter. Besides writing for children, she also wrote 4 books for adult readers. Time magazine named her as a runner-up for the Person of the year in 2007 and she is now the 197the richest person in the UK whose fortune worth around 600 million Pound. Currently, she is the mother of 3 children and married to Neil Murray.

What would I like to find out about her? Interesting question! But honestly speaking, I would like to know about her daily life and interests -what she does, how she speaks with her fans, whether she cooks or not, what she does with her children and husband, what type of dresses she wear, what type of house she lives in and so on and on. I would also like to discuss her writing career, what's her plan on writing more fantasy books for children and what motivates her to write. Finally, I would like to know the types of books she likes to read and what special qualities an aspiring writer should have.

She is my childhood hero and I have always wanted to meet her. Her books are quite special to me and helped me develop imagination. Sometimes her books inspired me to a great extent. I would like to know about the creator of Harry Potter and learn about her more. The way she had influenced millions of children all around the world is quite unmatched. I would like to spend some time with her and know more about his living legend.

Writing is a great profession and I believe the writers come with a special type of virtues. So, meeting the writers is interesting and I would like to meet Stephen King for his extraordinary story developing capability, especially horror and mysterious stories.

Stephen Edwin King, commonly known as Stephen King to his readers, was born in 1947. He is also famous for his pen name – Richard Bachman. King is skilled in composing stories in genres like horror, mystery, science fiction, supernatural fiction and others. Some of his books are bestsellers while some of the books have been adapted for films as well. Besides, his books are globally admired and even comic books have also been made with the characters created on his books. So far, King has created around 54 books under his authorship and Shawshank Redemption is one of the greatest movies of all time which is adapted from one of his books of the similar name.

To me, King is one of the greatest writers of all times. He is famous for his distinctive style of narration and the plots are undoubtedly extraordinary. He has also achieved some prestigious awards for his contribution to the US literature. To make the long story short, King has achieved a wide number of awards and his works have been nominated for adaptations. His father was a merchant seaman from Peru in Indiana. But King’s family had to experience hardship as his father had left the family with a trick. It is said that the death of one of his dearest friends, in his childhood, made him inspired to create his darker works. His interest to write horror might have appeared from the reading of horror comics in his early days.

As far I realise, King had a spiky childhood. He was deprived of fatherly affection and love. A substantial portion of his life underwent amid hardship, struggle and survival were challenging. His academic career also experienced some shocks. But he overcame all the obstacles to his success. Now he is one of the most influential writers. He is a wealthy man now. He can do whatever he wants in terms of a writer, influential person and a revered celebrity. But I would like to dig deeper into his life. In fact, it is impossible for everyone to overcome the adversities of life. The majority of them get ruined while the remaining are abolished from the earth. But there are some exceptional people who have overcome the barriers to success. So, I would like to find out and know about the secrets that have kept him so energetic and inspired. Actually, I want to learn from his firsthand experience to stand upright amid thousands of troubles.

There are people who are extraordinary in every aspect. I sense King is one of them and even a five-minute meet with him may teach me a large number of things. In fact, the things I will learn from him are unavailable in books, seminars or in other meetings. These are his real-life experiences and invaluable. So, is I have a chance to meet him, I would come to know about the undisclosed issues of life. Moreover, it is a dream for me to meet my dearest writer. Discussion topics:Reading and children.

Examiner:What kinds of books are most popular with children in your country? Why do you think that is?

Candidate:Well, from my experience and observation I can say that comics, detective books, rhyme collections, fairy tales, and fictions are more popular among children in my country. Young children prefer comics and books that have nice illustration while teenagers like to read detective books and fiction. Among girls, fairy tales are more endured. In my childhood, I had been a great fan of detective books and mystery books.

Examiner:Why do you think some children do not read books very often?

Candidate:Reading books is a habit and once a child starts feeling the unbound pleasure a book can offer, he/she becomes a book-lover. However, there are some who do not develop this habit either because he/she was too busy with other activities to dive his nose on a good book or because his parents did not inspire him to try reading books outside of the academic syllabus. Young children mimic their parents and if neither of the parents is a good reader, it is less likely that a child would start reading all by himself/herself.

Examiner:How do you think children can be encouraged to read more?

Candidate:As I have already said, parents need to be readers and motivate children to read books. They should read books to their children every night and let the young minds search for a world hidden in books. They should also be very prudent while selecting books for the offspring and can take help from the Internet as many websites list down " the most suitable books" based on a child's age. Teachers, on the other hand, can play a great role in school and can motivate young students to read more books by arranging reading sessions.

Discussion topics:Reading for different purposes.

Examiner:Are there any occasions when reading at speed is a useful skill to have? What are they?

Candidate:Well, as far as I can recall, being able to read at a fast speed is quite helpful for everyone, especially for students. Many exams, including IELTS and TOEFL, require a student to skim through the passages and get the gist as quickly as possible to answer the questions. Slow reading would deter a candidate to effectively end the exam in time and score well.

Besides, some reading competitions arranged in schools demand a student to read very quickly and meticulously. Finally, to finish some assignments given in the college, a student has to read many books and chapters. Those who do not have the speed-reading skill, find it very challenging to complete those assignments.

Examiner:Are there any jobs where people need to read a lot? What are they?

Candidate:Well, I can say that researchers, journalists, teachers, bloggers, business analysts, writers and editors need to read a lot. I am pretty sure there must be many other professions, apart from the ones I have mentioned, where people are required to read every now and then. From my experience, I can say that reading is a must for a researcher and so is it for a journalist. Bloggers have to read a lot to generate ideas and get to know the competitors and this is true for a business analyst and editor as well. Writers, always prefer to read and they are natural readers.

Examiner:Do you think that reading novels is more interesting than reading factual books? Why is that?

Candidate:This is really a tough question to answer and I am sure the answer will vary from person to person. Personally, I was a die-hard fan of novels in my whole life and found factual books less interesting. But this choice of mine has changed very recently. These days, I prefer factual books more than a novel. I believe this choice has something to do with the reader's taste, experience and age.
