Pros

  • Has several branches nationwide
  • Reasonable rates
  • Fast transfers
  • Senior industry player

JC Global stands out for us because of the diverse currencies available for exchange and its expansive presence in Singapore.

The money changer accepts US Dollars, Thai Bhat, Malaysian Ringgit, and Philippine Peso, among others, at rates that are acceptable and close to the current average rates.

We also find it convenient that JC Global has several branches nationwide. It’s impressive that all seven of its outlets are performing well, too!

The offices near MRT stations can be quite busy on weekends, though. We don’t like long lines, so we tried visiting on a Monday when people are fewer.

JC Global also has an app you can use for money transfers. However, you need to show up at the branch once to be properly registered to the system.

Pros

  • Reasonable rates
  • Generally seamless transaction
  • Usually responsive

Cons

  • Operating hours might be a little confusing
  • Queues might form during the weekends

We like AJS Foreign Exchange, as it offers no-fuss, straightforward money-changing services at a prime location.

The money changer is easy to find since it’s located inside a mall. Though, you might find a queue forming at times since the outlet is small.

That said, we are still impressed by how AJS handled our inquiries. We called the shop to ask for their rates and reservations, and we are happy with the response and accommodation of our requests.

The rates themselves are competitive and the transaction is generally smooth, which might explain why the money changer retains its clients. Some of them have been using the service for years!

With that said, we think AJS needs improvement in its use of technology. Since it has plenty of repeat clients, an app that can keep people updated with the shop’s rates and offerings in real-time will be a welcome addition.

We also find the AJS’ operating hours a bit confusing. The different hours might be off-putting to first-time clients who haven’t memorized the shop’s schedules yet.

Pros

  • Highly competitive rates
  • Prime location
  • Allows online reservation of currencies
  • Has 40+ years of industry experience

Cons

  • Customer service staff can be a bit impatient
  • Rates aren’t easily viewable

Arcade Money Changers is one of the best-known money-changing shops in Singapore thanks to its 40 years of operation here.

We think the company’s staying power is in part due to its consistent competitive rates. It buys and sells a wide range of currencies, too, making it a convenient option for both locals and tourists.

What disappointed us, though, is that we can’t know the rates over the phone. The company insists on checking its website to know the rates.

Checking the shop’s site is not a problem, but there are a few steps to take before you can see the actual rates.

This system can be a hassle for some prospective customers (and for some of us who are trying the service for the first time).

The shop is also closed on Sundays, which is a bit of waste since it’s settled in a prime location at the business center.

Pros

  • Polite and friendly staff
  • Great exchange rates
  • Prime mall location

Cons

  • No official website
  • Queues can form on busy days

We love Saj Exchange not solely for its reasonable rates but also for its friendly and polite staff.

Despite being busy almost every day, this money changer manages to maintain its stellar customer service. The shopkeeper has been very helpful with our queries!

The shop’s many repeat customers, despite its obscure location, also show that the shop ticks all the boxes for satisfactory client service.

We also like that the shop has stable operating hours and is open daily. This kind of availability makes Saj Exchange a preferable money changer for busy people.

That said, we think the lack of an official shop website limits the money changer’s potential. The short description available on its host mall’s website is simply not enough.

Also, we recommend visiting the shop on Mondays and Tuesdays when it’s the least busy. Weekends can yield long queues, which might be a hassle if you’re in a hurry.

5. Thin Margin

Pros

  • Convenient online service
  • Reasonable exchange rates
  • Customer service line open 24 hours

Cons

  • Denominations lean on the bigger side
  • The idea of delivering money might be uncomfortable for some

Thin Margin is a must-try service, and we say this despite the company being relatively new in the industry.

That’s because it offers reasonable rates, sometimes even better than traditional money changers across Raffles Quay.

Moreover, and perhaps this is the thing that sealed the deal, the money changer delivers the currencies right to our doorstep. This means less time queueing and more convenience.

The whole process from choosing the currencies to payment and delivery is generally smooth, too. We so love the idea of getting our Singaporean bills without leaving our homes!

However, Thin Margin usually sends currencies in big denominations, which can be a hassle. We also can’t choose the denominations, as it will make the shop’s logistics overly complex.

The shop doesn’t always get the best rates, too. But if you prefer convenience over visiting other money changers in person, the slight differences are not an actual deal breaker.

FAQs about Money Changers

Which day is best to exchange currency?

The best day to exchange currency in Singapore is ever-changing, given the different factors at play such as the world’s economic status.

That said, money-changing shopkeepers often give out tips to customers on how to leverage the movement of currencies. Be sure to chat with your service provider to acquire some gems of knowledge.

Should I exchange money before I travel to Singapore?

Exchanging money before traveling to Singapore is not advisable, especially if you’re doing it at the airport. That’s because airport exchange rates are not the best out there.

It’s better to exchange your currency upon arriving in Singapore, but don’t do it at the airport, too. Instead, get the most out of your money by transacting with a bank or a reputable money changer.

Should I use cash or a card in Singapore?

It’s ideal to bring both a card and some cash with you while exploring Singapore.
Most Singaporeans use cards to pay for goods and services here. That said, they also bring a little cash on the occasion that the store they visit isn’t accepting cards yet.

How much cash should I carry to Singapore?

Carrying around $100 a day in Singapore should be sufficient to pay for affordable attractions and cheap eats at hawker stalls.
That said, remember that most city attractions here accept card payments, so be sure to top up your tourist cards.
