Ahmedabad: The investigation into the illegal immigration of people from Gujarat between continents and across borders has turned murkier with the suspected involvement of government officials.
The city police have found that people being sent to the US illegally through the Mexico border had procured passports by presenting fake identity documents like election card, Aadhaar card, driving licence and birth certificate.
And, these documents were procured by theiragents for a measly Rs 500 to Rs 5,000. Several officials working with the passport office and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation are learnt to have come under the scanner following this breakthrough in the probe for having received money for facilitating fake documents for illegal travel.
“To get a passport, one needs three government documents like an election card, birth certificate, PAN card or driving licence. The agents have links in government offices providing these documents. They procure these fake documents for a price for their clients who want to go to the US by any means available,” said the police officer.
The officer added, “Once the documents are ready, the client’s photo is circulated to the agent’s aides in the passport office. When the client goes to the passport office, s/he will be favoured and the passport handed over in a day or two.”
The accused not only get fake identity documents prepared through the corrupt government officials, but also procure blank copies of identity documents in which they can print the client’s photograph, and forge a document that looks exactly like the original.
While fake Aadhaar card, PAN card, election card and driving licence can be obtained for as little as Rs 500, birth certificates can cost between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000.
“If a fake birth certificate has to be made, officials charge Rs 5,000 as this does not involve much work. However, in case there is a need to modify a person’s date or place of birth, then the officials charge Rs 10,000,” said the police officer.
The racket was busted on February 16 when the city crime branch arrested four people for forging passports in an attempt to smuggle people into the US. Mehsana-based agent Haresh Patel, Raju Prajapati, Hardik Patel, and Rajat Chavda had charted the Nigeria-Mexico route to the US, police said. The racket was exposed after the city crime branch received information that fake passports were being made in Mehsana. The cops said that the racket also involved agents in Delhi and Mumbai. The men charged each client between Rs 60-65 lakh.
