The Flash: The Origin of Caitlin's Killer Frost Powers Revealed - IGN (2024)

One of the bigger ongoing mysteries in The Flash has been solved, as this week's episode revealed the origin of Caitlin Snow's Killer Frost powers.Warning: this article contains spoilers for "The Icicle Cometh"!Last season, viewers learned that Caitlin originally manifested her Killer Frost powers as a child, contradicting the belief that she had been transformed by the STAR Labs particle accelerator explosion like most of Central City's metahumans. So if it wasn't the dark matter that did it, how did Caitlin become a metahuman years before Barry and Cisco?

That question was finally addressed in tonight's episode as Caitlin tracked down her wayward father, Dr. Thomas Snow. Thomas revealed that he once suffered from the neurodegenerative disease ALS (popularly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). He used advanced cryogenic science to cure himself of that disease. And fearing that his daughter would befall the same fate, he performed the same dangerous experiments on Caitlin as a child. That's when her Killer Frost personality was born and when her ice powers first manifested.

This new origin story is important because it suggests that Caitlin has a chance of recovering her powers (as hinted when she's able to have a mental conversation with her frosty alter-ego), which were seemingly removed when Caitlin had her dark matter energy drained by Clifford DeVoe in Season 4. Clearly, the root of her abilities goes far beyond mere dark matter exposure.

This episode is also notable for name-dropping two other ice-based DC villains. Thomas reveals that he once consulted with other cryogenic scientists, name-dropping both Victor Fries (better known as Batman's nemesis Mr. Freeze) and Louise Lincoln (another character who has used the Killer Frost name in the DC comics). With Nora Fries making her Arrowverse debut in the upcoming "Elseworlds" crossover, this surely isn't a coincidence that her husband is being referenced now.
