That's the theme of “The Founder,” a simultaneous celebration of ambition, innovation and entrepreneurship, while a cautionary tale of greed, hypocrisy and broken promises. The film tells the true story of Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), a salesman struggling to sell milkshake mixers in Illinois.
The Founder features the true story of how Ray Kroc (played by Michael Keaton), a struggling salesman from Illinois, met Mac and Dick McDonald, who were running a burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Kroc was impressed by the brothers' speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential.
In the end, Ray Kroc outsmarted the brothers and managed to acquire the brand, make a fortune out of it, and become successful, or so he thought. Ray Kroc's acquisition of his first franchise from the brothers would serve as the stepping stone for his bigger acquisition of McDonald's in the years to come.
Persistence is probably the biggest lessons this movie teaches. How do you create a restaurant business and become an overnight success at the age of 52? Ray Kroc said, “I was an overnight success alright, but 30 years is a long, long night.”
Tense, entertaining, and nostalgic yet decidedly modern, this drama is a feast of filmmaking. The Founder pairs brilliant acting with great storytelling to create a movie that, despite its long run time, moves like an energetic athlete. In short, it's a delight.
The brothers had told Kroc they were giving the operation, property and all, to the founding employees. In his anger, Kroc later opened a new McDonald's restaurant near the original McDonald's, which had been renamed the Big M because the brothers had neglected to retain rights to the name. The Big M later closed.
At the end of the film, the McDonald brothers were bought out by Ray Kroc. They were given a large sum of money but were no longer involved in the business.
The brothers also consistently told Kroc he could not make changes to things such as the original blueprint. Kroc eventually decided he wanted control of the company entirely, Kroc bought the company in 1961 for $2.7 million, calculated so as to ensure each brother received $1 million after taxes.
The end of the movie leaves the audience feeling a bit uneasy. Based on a true story, there's not a lot of sugarcoating that can be done, but it almost elevates the reality of the film. True stories don't always have happy endings -- and sometimes what we want to believe isn't the truth.
Ray married his third wife, Joan Mansfield, in 1969. Kroc died of heart failure in San Diego, Calif., on January 14, 1984 at age 81. At that time, McDonald's Corporation had 7,500 restaurants across nearly 36 countries, was valued at about $8 billion dollars, and had sold its 50 billionth hamburger.
In the film, Kroc and the two brothers frequently got into fierce conflicts because Mac and Dick resisted expansion and corporatisation, and inexplicably wanted only to protect the limited turf of the handful of McDonald's restaurants then. Unbelievably, the brothers had actually refused franchising at the start.
Last weekend I watched “The Founder” (2016) which was being suggested by Netflix as UK's No. 2 that day. If you have ever questioned why it's important to protect your intellectual property, watch this film. Based on a true story, the movie relates the adventures of struggling American businessman Ray Kroc in the 50s.
“The Founder” is a 2016 movie on the story of how Ray Kroc (who is considered as the one who made McDonald's the company it is today), “stole” McDonald's from its founders - Richard and Maurice McDonald. Ray Kroc, turning the chain into the most successful fast-food corporation in the world.
Ray's wife was unhappy with him because he was constantly away from home and obsessed with his work, which caused him to neglect her and their marriage. Ray Kroc's personality was portrayed as being charismatic, opportunistic, and ruthless in pursuit of his goals.
Starring Michael Keaton as businessman Ray Kroc, the film depicts the story of his creation of the McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain, which eventually involved forcing out the company's original founders to take control with conniving ruthlessness.
