Soda Pop Ice Cream (1)

It’s still a bit cold and rainy here in Portland, Oregon but we are looking forward to some warm sunny summer days. One of my favorite ways to celebrate summer is with homemade ice cream or a icy cold bottle of my favorite soda. So why not combine the two! Today’s Soda Ice Cream Recipe is the perfect combination of cold soda and ice cream. It may or may not get up to 95 degrees in Portland any time soon but we can still enjoy soda pop ice cream.

Soda Ice Cream Ingredients

This ice cream recipe is easy to make and only requires three ingredients.

  • Soda. Use your favorite flavor. I love orange or red cream soda but any flavor will work.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk.
  • Whole Milk. Whole milk will give you a creamier ice cream then 2 percent or something else.

Flavor Variations

  1. Root Beer. This one totally reminded me of the root beer whirls we use to get at The Spot Drive In in Kenosha, Wisconsin where the girls roller skated out to our car and hung the tray on the window!
  2. Orange. This created a yummy orange creamsicle flavor effect which is one of my favorite flavors of all times.
  3. Black Cherry. We loved this one too! This recipe works with any flavor of soda.

How to Make Ice Cream with Soda

  • Pour four cups of your favorite COLD soda into a bowl. The ice cream will freeze much faster if the soda is cold. If you forget to chill the soda in the fridge, just put it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.
  • Add in a can of sweetened condensed milk.

  • Add in one cup of whole milk. I definitely recommend using whole milk. This is an icy ice cream so the whole milk adds some creaminess.

  • Pour the mixture into ice cream maker and process according to manufacturers directions.

I liked this recipe; it was quick to make and was very refreshing! The flavor and texture were a little different than what I was expecting but that’s ok. I like experimenting with different ice cream styles. I used root beer to make mine. It was a light taste and maybe could have used a little more root beer flavor. The texture was very interesting! It was like frozen foam! It was light but not creamy; I would call it a “whipped root beer slush” rather than a true ice cream. It was good and my kids ate it greedily; I must admit I was hoping for a creamier texture. I should have expected that the texture would be a little more slushy given that so much of the recipe is water based. I had two servings the night we made it and then another serving the next day. I liked it the most when served with LOTS of whipped cream–it became dreamy! I must admit . . . whipped cream is my weakness! I will try it again with black cherry soda!
