How do you read ukulele tab sheets? ›

Read from left to right on the tab to play notes in sequence. Once you've plucked your first string, look to the right at the next column of numbers and re-adjust your fingers to play the next note that's on the tab. Keep reading from left to right until you reach a symbol or chord that you don't know.

It's usually pretty easy to figure out what these symbols mean. A bend looks like a curved arrow pointing up, a hammer-on has a little “h” in the symbol, whereas a pull-off has a little “p” in the symbol! Slides are lines from one fret to another, and vibrato is typically a zigzag line after a note.

Firstly, it's trendier than the recorder, and is often seen as a 'gateway' instrument to the full-sized guitar (Billie Eilish learned to play the ukulele and sells a branded version through Fender). Secondly, it is reasonably easy to master ukulele basics (even if it's tricky to become accomplished).

Finger Positioning

Another issue that might cause your ukulele to sound bad is where you place your fingers on the fretboard. If you are playing them too close to the frets (the metal lines on the neck), the strings will almost certainly buzz. This is a super simple fix.

You'll read TAB from left to right just like you would anything else. Different numbers and symbols will be placed on the horizontal lines. These numbers tell you what fret you need to play. For instance, if a TAB shows a 5 on the top line(string 1e) you will need to play fret 5 of the little e string.

The bottom line represents the lowest, thickest string, while the top string represents the highest, thinnest string. For standard tunings, this means that the lines will represent, from the bottom up, the low E, A, D, G, B and high E strings. Use the numbers on the tab to fret spaces on the neck.

Basically, you read tabs from bottom to top, because the lines represent the individual strings on a guitar from the guitarist's point of view. The bottom line represents the low E-string, the top line the high E-string. The numbers represent the position of the finger on the fretboard.

Guitar frets are numbered from 1 to 24 (sometimes less, depending on guitar size), starting from the bar closest to the guitar's headstock. So, if the string has a 0, that means you'll play that string “open,” meaning you don't press down on any fret. If the tab has a 1, you'll play the first fret.
