Later on, I know we talk about the H+ ion and OH- ion concentrations deciding "acid-ness" and "base-ness" (the pH scale). But in 2:34 P. S.: Sorry for the long question. And read the comment too, which is an afterthought. :) • (10 votes) Xalibur 4 years agoPosted 4 years ago. Direct link to DarKed's post “A matchstick is made up o...” A matchstick is made up of a combination of substances. So it is made up of both metals and non-metals. Lucifer Matches:- These are ‘strike anywhere matches’. They are called so because they catch fire when they are rubbed against any hard surface. In these matches, the tip of the matchstick is composed of antimony trisulphide, red phosphorus and potassium chlorate in addition to a binding material like glue. Safety Matches These burn only when they are made to strike on a particular surface. The chemical on the stick is composed of potassium chlorate and antimony sulphide mixed with glue. When this is rubbed on a surface made of red phosphorus, antimony sulphide and fine glass powder, a small part of phosphorus detaches and catches fire. This spark ignites the antimony sulphide which further helps in the decomposition of potassium chlorate which provides oxygen for combustion. 2.Can non-metallic oxides be amphoteric as well?
Some metal oxides are amphoteric because they can react with both acids and bases to produce salt and water. This is because of the unique nature and bonding in the oxide. It is too complex to explain here, but you can check this site for more information :
https://anhourofchemaday.wordpress.com/2013/05/18/why-is-aluminium-oxide-amphoteric/
Non-metallic oxides can be amphoteric too. The best example is Water, which is amphoteric by the Bronsted-Lowry definition ( check my answer to Isabella Mathews above ). Basically an acid is a substance that donates a proton(H+) and a base accepts a proton. Water can both accept or donate a proton when an acid or a base is dissolved in it to form the hydronium or hydroxide ion.
H2O + HCl = H3O+(hydronium) + Cl-
Here water acts like a base, accepting a proton.
H2O + NH3 = NH4+ + OH-(hydroxide)
Here water acts like an acid, donating a proton.
Substances which are amphoteric by the Bronsted-Lowry definition are said to be Amphiprotic, meaning that they can either donate or accept a proton. Just for your knowledge.
Mg(OH)2 is Magnesium Hydroxide that is Obtained when Mg is reacted with Hot Water.
MgO is soluble in Hot Water, because of the supersaturation.
