Nagpur: Amid the ongoing heated debate over non-vegetarian and vegetarian people in the country, a survey has come out with stunning facts. The data of Rashtriya Parivar Swasthya Sarvekshan-5 (National Family Health Survey-5) revealed that about 90 percent people eat meat, fish or chicken in 16 states of India.

In recent times, there was a lot of ruckus about the consumption of non-veg in Navratri and some organizations said that the sale and consumption of meat should be banned during this period. Along with this, allegations were also made against certain communities regarding non-veg. In this background, the figures in the survey have come as a big surprise.

The data:
The National Family Health Survey said that in 16 states, about 90 percent people eat meat, fish or chicken. At the same time, in four states and Union Territories, this figure is up to 75-90 percent. According to the survey, 50 to 75 percent of the people in five states or Union Territories eat non-veg. Among the surveyed states, West Bengal has the highest number of non-vegetarians at 98.7 percent. At the same time, 97.8% in Tamil Nadu, 78.6% in Assam, 63.2% in Delhi, 55% in Uttar Pradesh and 26.8% in Rajasthan are non-vegetarians.

Shocking figures:
A look at the statistics of different communities regarding eating veg and non-veg, then it is seen that except the Jain community, most people of all other religions prefer non-veg food. Pew Research Centre did a survey about it. It was revealed that people of different religions eat a lot of non-veg. In the results of this survey, it was said that about 92 percent of the people of the Jain community believed that they do not eat non-veg and are completely vegetarian. At the same time, only 8 percent of the Muslims were such, who said that they do not eat non-veg. Talking about the Christian community, only 10 percent of the people of this community are vegetarian.

According to the survey, 44 percent of the people belonging to different castes included in the Hindu community are vegetarian and the remaining 56 percent fall in the category of non-vegetarians.

People avoid non-veg on many occasions:
In the same survey of Pew Research Centre, it has also been told what percentage of people are such who are non-vegetarians, but on many occasions avoid eating non-veg. According to the survey, 67 percent of Muslims and 66 percent of Christians avoid non-veg for some reason. However, it happens on a particular day or for some reason. Among Hindus, except 44 percent vegetarians, the remaining 39 per cent are those who abstain from eating non-veg on many occasions or do not eat at all. These include many special days and festivals.

Different beliefs about meat too:
It has been revealed in this survey that people of different religions also have different thinking about meat. Just as most people in the Hindu community do not like to include beef in their non-veg diet, a Pew Research survey states that there are 72 percent of Hindus who believe that if someone consumes beef, he is not a Hindu. At the same time, 77 percent of Muslims believe that those who eat pig meat cannot be Muslims. As Hindus believe about eating beef, so do people of Sikh, Jain and Buddhist religions.
