Marked Down for Speaking More Than 2 Minutes? (2024)

Will you be marked down if speaking for more than 2 minutes in IELTS Speaking Part 2?

Recently, a subscriber on our YouTube channel, IELTS Energy TV, posted this question:

If we are asked to speak for 2 minutes, then should we only prepare for 2 minutes, or can we prepare for more time, like you did in your video about describing a mobile phone? Does it reduce our band score if we speak for more than the time allotted to us?

Let’s break this down, so you have all the facts about IELTS Speaking Part 2.

You have one minute to take notes before you talk for 2 minutes.

During this minute, you should write down everything you think of, but still in an organized way.

There is no such thing as ‘too many notes‘ for Part 2!

Try to organize your notes by time, as in telling a story, a strategy we recommend for any Part 2 cue card.

In the video he is referring to, in which I give a sample Part 2 answer about a mobile phone, I do note that I still had more to say beyond the topic, as I had prepared more notes than I used.

That is the ideal situation, preparing more than you need!

The fact is that the examiner will not allow you to speak beyond 2 minutes.

The Speaking Exam is strictly timed by the examiner. Thus, you have exactly one minute to brainstorm, and exactly two minutes to talk in Part 2.

After the examiner stops you, she/he will usually ask you a closing question, which is very simple, and your answer for that can be 1-2 sentences.
