Macca’s hot cakes video stuns viewers (2024)

It’s the simple pleasures in life that are the most amusing – just like this viral TikTok video which literally shows how Macca’s hot cakes are cooked.

Clocking in at more than 211,000 likes and nearly 2000 comments, the 13-second clip shows a staff worker pouring pancake mix onto a hotplate, followed by a pressing machine which then transforms it into three perfectly cooked hot cakes.

While the video has left many stunned, it also sparked a furious debate with hundreds arguing it’s not actually how the popular menu item is made.

And it appears they are correct.

“I don’t believe this for a second,” one viewer wrote.

“I can confirm this is wrong,” said another.

“The ones in Australia are frozen then packed the day before, at least they were like 10 years ago,” a third person said, while a fourth commented: “My boyfriend works at McDonald’s and the hot cakes they get here come in frozen bags.”

While many appear to have a strong opinion about how they are cooked, it’s still one of the most popular Macca’s breakfast items in Australia.

However, according to Mashed, they are indeed frozen, preformed, pre-cooked and then zapped in the microwave for heating – well in America anyway.

Others questioned if it really matters.

For those who really care, we put the question to McDonald’s Australia and can confirm they are not made on the spot.

“Our hot cakes are made by our local bakery supplier using 100 per cent Aussie wheat,”

a McDonald’s Australia Spokewoman said.

“They’re then heated to order in our restaurants.”

Meanwhile, if all this frozen and reheated talk has turned you off, why not try and make this copycat version yourself. All you need is eight ingredients.

PANCAKES

Ingredients

1½ cups plain flour

2 tbs sugar

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp bicarb of soda

½ tsp salt

1 cup milk

2 large eggs

¼ cup melted butter

Oil, to fry

Whipped butter and maple syrup, to serve

Method

Crack eggs in a mixing bowl. Add milk and melted butter. Stir to combine.

Add flour, baking powder, bicarb, sugar and salt. Mix well.

Heat a little oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Pour in about ½ cup of the batter and cook about a minute until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula and cook the other side for 30 seconds or until golden. Repeat with the remaining batter.

Serve hot with butter and syrup.

Hot cakeswere added to the McDonald’s menu in 1977, as part of the corporation’s introduction of a full breakfast line-up that included the traditional big breakfast, along with scrambled eggs, hash browns, and Danish pastries.

A stand-alone order of hotcakes including butter and syrup clocks in at 600 calories, with 16g of fat, 45g of sugar, and a whopping 102g of total carbs, according to Mashed.
