Jay P. McCloskey

In 1993, President Bill Clinton nominated Jay P. McCloskey to be the United States Attorney for the District of Maine, and the United States Senate confirmed him. Jay held that post for eight years. Prior to becoming Maine's chief federal prosecutor, Jay served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maine from 1980 until 1993. During his tenure as United States Attorney, Jay served as a member of the United States Attorney General's Advisory Committee from 1993 through 1995, where he played an integral role in the formulation of Department of Justice policies. Jay also served as the Chair for the U.S. Attorney General's Subcommittee on the Federal Sentencing Guidelines from 1993 through 2001 and as a member of the Attorney General's select committee on the criminal status of crack cocaine cases. He is recognized for his expertise in the field of white collar crime and federal regulatory compliance. By the time he retired from federal service, Jay had litigated dozens of federal cases before the United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

Jay is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Maine Bar Foundation and of the University of Maine Alumni Association. He has also testified on criminal justice topics before the United States Senate's Judiciary Committee. Jay has been a frequent lecturer and speaker on the subject of complex criminal prosecutions before audiences in the United States, South America, Australia and New Zealand.
