Drinking coffee is an American pastime that some would say fuels the daily office worker, or at least helps gets them started every morning. The infographic gives the cup-by-cup statistics on coffee drinking, including coffee sales per year, which gender drinks the most, and which country loves a good Cup O’ Joe the most. A mug full of java isn’t just a morning beverage; it is part of America’s culture and the world’s. While love may make the world go ‘round, it certainly gets a shot in the arm from coffee as well.

Coffee Drinking Statistics

In the U.S., love coffee (average consumption among coffee drinkers is about 3.1 cups per day in the United States) but we love our specialty coffees even more. Specialty coffee sales are increasing 20% every year.

In total, the United States drinks about 66 billion cups of coffee per year which includes espresso, cappuccino, latte and iced coffees.

While both genders drink a lot of coffee, males drink slightly more than females. Considering the entire U.S. population, on average, men down about 1.7 cups and women around 1.5 cups.

One of the main reasons people drink coffee, other than the flavor, is for the jolt of caffeine it provides. The human body can absorb about 300mg, which means additional amounts are not used to provide additional stimulation. Also, the body dissipates 20% of the caffeine per hour.

It isn’t any surprise that the majority of caffeine consumed comes from coffee. The following amounts of caffeine, on average, can be found in 7 ounces of coffee or in a single shot of espresso.

  • Espresso – 100mg of caffeine
  • Brewed – 80 to 135mg of caffeine
  • Instant – 65 to 100mg of caffeine
  • Decaf – 3 to 4mg of caffeine

How much coffee does the average worker drink?

  • 20 cups per week
  • 1,040 cups per year
  • 47,840 cups during a lifetime of working (18- to 64-years of age)

And while the caffeine may provide stimulation, the time lost for coffee making and drinking can add up to be a large amount of work time.

  • 24 minutes per day are spent making and drinking coffee
  • 190 days are lost to coffee during a working lifetime
  • $400 per worker, per year are lost to the quest for coffee

It is good to know that the United States isn’t alone in its obsession with coffee. In fact, America is only number 8 in total coffee consumption. The top 10 coffee drinking countries in the world are:
