This is the Best Meal Prep Hack!

I’ve been freezing bananas for ages now, especially since I’m a big smoothie fanatic. But there are actually so many things, in addition to smoothies, I find myself using frozen bananas for. There’s my paleo banana bread that’s always on repeat, this 3-ingredient banana smoothie, or these extra chewy banana oatmeal cookies. But, I’ll go over more options below.

Needless to say, it never hurts to prep some frozen bananas. It’s quick, easy, and won’t take up that much space in your freezer! And hey, it may even encourage you to make more healthy recipes. That’s always a bonus right?

What You Need to Freeze Bananas

Since you’ll be using frozen bananas in their natural state, I recommend freezing ones that are ripe, even to the point where they are just starting to turn brown – they’re naturally sweeter that way!

How to Freeze Whole or Half Bananas

  • Slice the bananas. You can leave the banana whole, or slice it in half. Then arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and place it in the freezer for about 1 to 2 hours, until they’re completely frozen.
  • Store the bananas away. Transfer the frozen bananas to a freezer-safe bag labeled with the date. Seal the bag, removing as much air as possible, and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Ways to use frozen whole or half bananas: These are best for smoothies, smoothie bowls, or nice creams! Frozen bananas make those recipes extra thick, creamy, and perfectly chilled. And if you’re craving a chocolate covered banana, insert a popsicle stick into each banana before freezing. Then you’ll have a base ready for dipping!

How to Freeze Sliced Bananas

  • Slice the bananas. You can slice each banana into ½-inch or 1-inch rounds. Then arrange the slices in a single layeron a baking sheet.
  • Freeze the bananas. Place the baking sheet in the freezer and freeze the bananas for 1 to 2 hours.
  • Store the bananas away. Transfer the frozen bananas to a freezer-safe bag labeled with the date. Seal the bag, removing as much air as possible, and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Ways to use frozen sliced bananas: Frozen slices are also great for smoothies and smoothie bowls. But they’re also a great shortcut to make my chocolate almond butter banana bites! Just slather some almond butter in between two pieces and stick them back in the freezer.

Also, frozen banana slices thaw faster than a whole or half banana piece. So if you need thawed bananas right away, this might be a better option.

How to Freeze Mashed Bananas

  • Mash the bananas. Place the bananas in a mixing bowl and mash away using the back of a fork. The bananas should be soft and creamy by the end.
  • Freeze the mashed bananas. Instead of freezing the mashed bananas as a whole, divide it into equal portions (I recommend ¼ cup or ½ cup) in a silicone tray or muffin pan. That way, you won’t need to measure the bananas after the fact when you’re using them for baked goods and such. Then place the tray in the freezer and freeze for 2 to 3 hours.
  • Store the bananas away. Transfer the frozen banana blocks to a freezer-safe bag labeled with the date. Seal the bag, removing as much air as possible, and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • For thawing frozen mashed bananas, you can thaw it overnight in the fridge, or let it sit at room temperature for about 1½ to 2 hours.

Ways to use frozen mashed bananas: Mashed bananas are the foundation for so many baked goods and snacks such as my paleo banana bread, banana nut muffins, banana oatmeal cookies, and banana bread energy balls!

Best Containers to Freeze Bananas

After having done so many meal preps over the years, I’ve found the below products to be invaluable when freezing certain items – like bananas!

  • Silicone Trays: My favorite Souper Cube trays have measurement lines on the tray, which is such a benefit! That means you don’t have to get an extra measuring cup dirty, you can add the mashed frozen banana straight to the storage container. And you’ll have the perfect amount every time!
  • Silicone Bags: I really like to use these silicone Stasher bags. Plus, they now come in so many different sizes and colors.

There’s More Ingredients You Can Freeze!

The freezer really is the best invention. So make use of it when you’ve got extra zucchini or cauliflower on hand as well! Here are my tips on:

FAQs

How to Freeze Bananas (3 Ways!) - Downshiftology? ›

You can leave the banana whole, or slice it in half. Then arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and place it in the freezer for about 1 to 2 hours, until they're completely frozen. Store the bananas away. Transfer the frozen bananas to a freezer-safe bag labeled with the date.

What is the best method for freezing bananas? ›

Remove the peels and cut them into coins or chunks. Arrange the banana pieces, uncovered, on a parchment-lined baking sheet in a single, even layer. (You can also line the sheet with a silicone mat.) Put the baking sheet on a level surface in the freezer until they're frozen, about three to four hours.

Is it better to freeze whole bananas with or without peel? ›

You can freeze whole, peeled bananas in large plastic bags like smaller banana chunks. You can also freeze bananas whole in their peels, but this will only work if you want mashed bananas. After thawing and peeling a banana frozen in its peel, it will come out of the peel in an essentially mashed texture.

How do you keep frozen bananas from turning brown? ›

To prevent the bananas from turning brown in the freezer, make sure to use an airtight container, or freezer-safe plastic bag. Exposure to air is what causes bananas to brown, so as long as they're sealed tightly, you won't have any issues with browning.

How do you freeze bananas in a Ziploc bag? ›

Simply peel and slice your bananas. Lay them flat on a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet and put in the freezer for 2 hours until they are solid. Transfer them to a freezer bag and remove as much air as possible. You can freeze these for up to 3 months and they will not turn brown.

Do bananas taste good after freezing? ›

Many people have concerns about the flavour and consistency of frozen bananas. While it is true that bananas will lose their firmness when thawing takes place, the flavour and nutritional value will remain the same as fresh bananas.

How ripe should bananas be for freezing? ›

Choose ripe, but not overripe bananas. They should have a yellow peel with some brown spots. Peel the bananas and cut them into chunks or slices. The size of the pieces is up to you, but keep in mind that smaller pieces will freeze faster and be easier to use later.

Do bananas get mushy after freezing? ›

You can freeze unpeeled bananas, if you want—you'll just need to thaw them and peel them when they're ready. But keep in mind that bananas frozen that way get mushy when they're thawed, so you'll need to use them only for recipes that require mashed bananas.

Can I freeze old bananas for banana bread? ›

Frozen bananas are a great way to use overripe bananas in banana bread. If you're like me, you rarely remember to use your overripe bananas on the day they are perfectly ripe so freezing them is a great solution. Thawed bananas are easier to mash and can also add extra moisture to the batter.

Can you freeze mashed bananas for banana bread? ›

Measure out the desired amount of mashed banana according to your favorite banana bread recipe and either put the measured amount in sandwich bags or small, plastic containers. Freeze. When you are ready to bake banana bread, remove bag or container from freezer, thaw, and use.

What container can you freeze bananas in? ›

You can freeze bananas in a large zipped-top freezer bag or any covered container. I like to use these glass freezer containers, which are fantastic for freezer meals & snacks, too.

Why is my frozen banana black? ›

If the banana is properly stored in the freezer, there may be a slight darkening that occurs. This is the natural ripening process along with the sugary liquid that releases from the banana during the freezing process.

Why do bananas go black in the freezer? ›

Bananas grow in hot climates, so they are unused to the cold. If they're kept at a cold temperature, the enzymes that enable them to ripen are inhibited. And as those enzymes become inactive, other enzymes operate more efficiently. Some cause cell damage, while others (browning enzymes) cause the skin to blacken.

What happens if you put a banana in a Ziploc bag? ›

Bananas that are stored in plastic bags will ripen faster. Instead, keep your bananas at room temperature in a cool, dark place to be sure they receive fresh, well-ventilated air.

Is it OK to store bananas in a plastic bag? ›

Never store bananas in plastic bags, which hold too much moisture and could cause the fruit to rot.

Can apples be frozen? ›

Sweeter apples such as Fujis or Galas are more likely to hold their flavor than tart varieties, but any apple will do fine in the freezer for six to nine months. Perhaps more important to keep in mind, though, is that freezing an apple does alter the texture, leaving the flesh spongier than that of a fresh apple.

How long do peeled bananas last in the freezer? ›

Freeze bananas for up to 3–6 months. Freezing bananas beyond 6 months may be fine, but the peeled bananas do begin to darken over time, and then they thaw into an overly mushy mess. I've found up to 6 months is fine, and under 3 months is even better.

Can you eat the peel on a frozen banana? ›

In short, yes, banana peels are safe to eat and offer some nutrition.

Is it better to put bananas in the fridge or freezer? ›

You can refrigerate bananas, but there's a caveat

Bananas are temperature-sensitive and should be stored at around 56 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit to maintain their flavor and texture. Therefore, they belong on the counter or in a cool, dry place — at least until they are fully ripe.

Why do frozen bananas taste better? ›

When you remove the banana from the freezer, the amylase diffused in the freezing process starts to convert the starch diffused in the freezing process into sugar, thus making the defrosted frozen banana sweeter on the tongue (via Fine Dining Lovers).
