Age Range: Girls can start Browniesat seven years old. They usually leave between their 10th and 11thbirthday.


Sixes: When Brownies start they are put into a Six. Thisis a small group of up to six girls who often work together as a team.The Guider chooses one of the girls to be in charge of the group. Sheis called the Sixer. Another Brownie is chosen to be the Seconder. TheSeconder is responsible for helping the Sixer and taking on her role ifshe is absent. The Sixes are named after fairy creatures or woodlandanimals. You can see all the sixes in the badgessection.

Pack: Each Brownie Unit contains several sixes (usuallyfour). A Brownie Unit is called a Pack. It is given a name based onwhere it meets (for example 4th Cambridge Brownies). There will be oneGuider in charge (traditionally, but not always called Brown Owl). Shewill be helped by (usually) another two adults (traditionally this wasa qualified guider called Tawny Owl and a guider working towardsbecoming qualified called Snowy Owl, but this is rarely the casetoday). There may also be Unit Helpers, Young Leaders (between the agesof 14 and 18) and Pack Leaders (Guide aged girls who help).

Beyond the Pack

Several local Packs join together to forma District. Guiders from a district meet together about once a term.They are also likely to hold District events for the girls at specialtimes each year, such as Thinking Day. The person in charge of aDistrict is called the District Commissioner. She holds the positionfor a maximum of ? years.

Several Districts form a Division. TheDivision Commissioner is in charge of the Division, but there is also aDivision Team of advisors.

Several Divisions form a County. Just likethe Division level there is a County Commissioner and a County Team ofAdvisers. The Counties within guiding are not the same as the Englishgeographical Counties. EachCounty has a special emblem, and all members of that county may wear itas a cloth or metal badge.

Several Counties make a Region. There are nine British Regions. Belowis a map showing the nine regions and links to theRegion level websites.
