Database description

Global Financial Data (1)The Global Financial Databaseprovides long-range historical data on stocks, bonds,bills and other instruments, covering approximately 200 countries from the early modern periodto the present. EUI members can create an account by following the instructions below at 'How to access data.' The GFD platform is called 'Finaeon.'

Financial and economic data seriesare assigned ninemetadata descriptors: SeriesID;Description; Start date; End date/most recent; Periodicity; Country/territory; Currency; Series type (eg. government bond yields) andGFD sector designation (eg. equity).Series include:

  • Asset Allocation from the 1800s to present
  • National accounts and GDP from 1790 to present
  • Equitiesfrom 1694 to present
  • Economic, commodity and exchange rate data from 1200 to present
  • Fixed income and inflation from the late 13th century to present.
Time period

Global Financial Datacoverage is for approximately 200 countries from the early modern period topresent - varying by series and country.

EUI members can access the data as follows:

First time EUIusers ofGlobal Financial Data

Returning EUIusersofGlobal Financial Data

- Createan account with an eui.eu mail address at the'Register' link on the GFD platform

- Log on to GFD using the instructions at right.

- Enter the user name (EUI mail address) and GFD password on the GFD login page

- Data can be accessedvia the GFDatabase search engine in the left menu; selectcountry, series category, series type and indicator

- Users can create workbooks via theAutoTRAClink in the top bar (beside 'Home').

Data collated by Global Financial Data is compiled from multiple archival sources includingfinancial reports,news periodicals, sectoral journalsand other publications. "Finaeon GFD has produced continuous chain-linked data sets by appending the current data series with the historical data which have been verified, cross-referenced and transcribed prior to their inclusion."

Factiva(Dow Jones) is a digital archive of global news content covering18,000 sources from 159 countries. The platform also hosts the Factiva Companies & Markets database, providing five years of headline economic data. (EUI members requiring longer data series should usethe other databases listed in this directory.)Users ofFactiva can locate, elaborate and export data on single companies, or a selection of companies, by peer group. Orbis Europeis a database ofcomparable financial and businessinformationon Europe's largest 600,000 public and private companies by total assets.43 countries are covered. Orbis Europe is published by Moody's Analytics (formerly published by Bureau van Dijk as 'Amadeus').The databaseprovides standardised annual accounts (consolidated and unconsolidated), financial ratios,sectoral activities and ownership data. Orbis Europe issuitablefor research on competitiveness, economic integration, applied microeconomics, business cycles, economic geographyand corporate finance.[Full details]
