Recipe Tips and Substitutions

Frightfully Fun Spider Donuts (7)

The hardest part of this recipe is creating the spider legs. After trying to use a knife I found it was much easier just to use my hands to break the pretzels. The best part to use for the legs is the top two loops, so try to break the pretzel down the middle.

Yes, spiders have 8 legs, but 3 legs on each side took up a lot of space on the donut, and it was a little crowded. Feel free to use 4 legs on each side, you’ll just need to put them closer together.

If you don’t want to worry about breaking the mini pretzel twists, you can try the larger pretzel thins. They will be easier to cut with a knife and will give you larger spider legs.

If you don’t want to use black writing gel, you can use some melted chocolate chips in a piping bag.

What can I use if I don’t have candy eyes?

It might be hard to find candy eyes during the month of October. So, if your local stores run out, you can try:

Spider donuts are a creative and fun treat for Halloween gatherings or just a spooky snack. The recipe calls for mini chocolate-covered donuts, pretzel legs, and candy eyes, creating a delightful yet slightly eerie dessert. The preparation involves breaking mini pretzel twists into curved legs and attaching three legs to each side of the donut, securing candy eyes with black writing gel as a finishing touch.

Let's break down the concepts used in this recipe:

Ingredients:

  1. Mini Pretzel Twists: Used for the spider legs. Breaking them into smaller, curved pieces helps create the spider effect.
  2. Mini Chocolate-Covered Donuts: The base of the spider, where the pretzel legs and candy eyes are attached.
  3. Black Writing Gel: Acts as an adhesive to attach the candy eyes to the donuts.
  4. Candy Eyes: Decorative elements to give the spiders their spooky appearance.

Procedure:

  1. Preparing Pretzel Legs: Breaking the pretzel twists into smaller, curved pieces to resemble spider legs.
  2. Assembling the Spiders: Attaching three pretzel legs on each side of the mini chocolate-covered donuts.
  3. Adding Eyes: Using black writing gel as glue to affix candy eyes onto the donuts.

Recipe Tips and Substitutions:

  • Pretzel Leg Preparation: Advises breaking the pretzels by hand for ease and recommends using the top two loops for the legs.
  • Leg Placement: Suggests using fewer than three legs on each side if space becomes limited on the donut.
  • Alternative Ingredients: Recommends larger pretzel thins or melted chocolate chips in place of mini pretzel twists and black writing gel respectively.
  • Substitute for Candy Eyes: Suggests using mini chocolate chips or upside-down white chocolate chips with black writing gel dots if candy eyes are unavailable.

This recipe is not just about creating a visually appealing dessert but also emphasizes ease of preparation, making it an excellent choice for involving kids in the kitchen or as a fun treat for a Halloween-themed party.
