Where are friend updates on Duolingo? ›

Friend Updates are a form of notifications on Duolingo that can be accessed in your profile. If one of your followed users completes a milestone, you will receive a Friend Update marked by a red circle in the profile section.

If you tap the bell icon at the bottom of your screen, you'll be taken to your Feed. That's where you can high-five friends for reaching exciting milestones, like 10 lessons in a day, a 365 day streak, or a promotion to the Diamond League. And don't worry—they'll cheer you on, too!

Duolingo offers a generous free plan that includes basic functionalities. Duolingo Super plan ($5 per month paid annually) gives you access to extra features and an ad-free experience. The Super Family plan ($9.99 per month paid annually) is designed for families or groups looking to learn a new language together.

With this redesign, we wanted to update the home screen with a simplified learning path. The update will more clearly guide you through your course, and better integrate some of our most innovative and beloved features into the learning path, like Stories and Tips (for courses where they're available).

Tap on the profile icon on the Duolingo platform. Look for the 'add friends' option and tap on it. You will then have several options to add friends: Find friends from your device's contact list.

Flirting is a bonus skill that can be bought in the Lingot store for 30 lingots. Even though it is a skill for the tree, the tree can be finished regardless of whether you complete the skill or not.

Please note that your friends can find you via the search function if they know which email address you used for your account. If you are a student using Duolingo for Schools, your email can be seen by your teacher (and students can see the teacher's email).

At Duolingo, we're developing our courses to get you to a level called B2, at which you can get a job in the language you're studying. Reaching that kind of proficiency requires dedication, varied practice opportunities, and a lot of time.

What happens if you lose all 5 hearts in Duolingo? ›

After all hearts are gone, this would lead to failing the lesson or practice. When lesson or practice was complete, one extra XP is gained for each heart left, in addition to the base XP gain for successfully completing a lesson or practice.

You can earn XP and rise in the ranks of your leaderboard. Then the top ten XP performers of that league will be “promoted” to a higher tier for the next week. The bottom XP performers will be demoted to the previous tier.

Approach to learning

The biggest difference between Babbel and Duolingo is the approach to language learning. Babbel is a better option if you want traditional language instructions through modules and lessons. By contrast, Duolingo works great if you need a playful, gamified experience.

Again like other free apps, Duolingo makes a good amount from display ads. For non-super-users, display ads will pop up during the course of their learning challenges or be displayed between 'levels'. This means Duolingo makes money from advertising companies that are interested in this subset of users.

As a lifelong language learner who's fluent in three languages, I've tested out these popular apps, and they have very different approaches. I like Rosetta Stone for the immediate immersion it offers, but Duolingo is great for the more casual language learner as it offers a fun, gamified way to steadily gain knowledge.

Why can't I access certain features, such as following friends or leaderboards? There are privacy settings and legal requirements that may restrict access to certain features on Duolingo.

On the web, you can view your Friends List on the homepage. NOTE: This Friends List is different from your Leaderboard where you compete with Duolingo learners in a weekly XP competition.

It is available on the app too. You go to settings, then to preferences, then you can toggle friends quests on or off.

All Duolingo forum pages, except Sentence Discussions, are removed and no longer accessible. When were the forums removed? We sunset the forums on March 22, 2022. You will no longer be able to view or make new posts/comments in the forums.
