New Delhi: The New Year is again here and like each time several states in the country have already issued guidelines for New Year eve, especially for those who find it difficult to keep themselves away from their favourite hard drinks.

As every year plenty of cases of drink and drive are reported across the country, it has become habitual for the administration to issue the same guidelines on New Year eve. However, it hardly makes any difference as people commit the same crime.

In foreign countries like UK or US, one is allowed to drink and drive with less than 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. However, in India, the limit is set at 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

In this write-up, we will shed light on drinking norms in India but before diving further into the topic, firstly lets us make you aware of certain facts.

As mentioned above, that in India the limit is set at 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. However, reportedly, this varies to different figures depending on body weight but the average male weighing 65 kg can stay within the legal limit if he drinks:

-- 2 pints of beer (660ml). One is advised not to drink large bottles (750ml).

--One large peg of whisky (60ml)

--Two glasses of wine (200ml)

In India, the permissible age of consuming alcohol differs from 18 years to 25 years and varies from state to state. However, a maximum number of states and union territories in India have a lawful drinking age of 21 years.

Being a driver or holding a command position of your car, you should know that alcohol above 30 mg per 100 ml of blood can land you in trouble if caught as The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 -Section 185 considers drink and drive as illegal in India and is punishable under the Indian Penal Court.

Punishment for Drink and Drive

As per this act, for the first-time offence, one has to pay a penalty of Rs 2000 and custody till 6 months and one has to pay a penalty of Rs 3000 or will be sent to custody for 2 years.
